POLL:
those of you who were admitted to clinical psych PhD programs..what were your general GRE scores?

WOW! I just looked at the thread that was posted and actually thought those were super high scores....so I wouldn't be discouraged if you are below those (i.e. aim for something around 1250, I think). Of course, it depends on where you apply, but just think of your GRE score as a screening measure. As long as you are in the range of the given scores at a given school, chances are, they will consider the rest of your app, which is probably fantastic.

FWIW I have heard the score to shoot for is a 1300 for Clinical, but it depends on where you apply and who you ask.

I pray to GOD that you are right because I just took the test and got a 1200...i think i'm going to take it again in early december. those are SO high...

I have no problem in being completely honest and saying that I got into several schools on a 1250 (and I didn't have a fantastic undergrad institution to pad my application). Schools vary on the weight they give GRE scores, but the big names are going to care bc they get so many qualified applicants and sometimes that's all it comes down to. I think I'm in a wonderful, respectable program now, and I owe that to the committee's thoughtfulness in regards to my entire application. Best of luck to you.

and on the other hand i had a 1460 (1500 if you take best section from 2 sittings), and i was shut out.

honestly there is no way i will get a 1500. now im really nervous

It's about a lot more than the GRE. Of course a higher score is better, but only up to a point. I think once you make it to interviews, the GREs kind of go out the window. Good scores are helpful for fellowships, though. You certainly don't need a 1500 to get in, but it's also not a guarantee of admission.

Yup, GRE's mean pretty much squat once you get to the interview stage.

Before that, it's often some kind of GRE/GPA calculation. I've heard 1250 mentioned as well, but I've also heard from professors they like a minimum 600 in each. So, a really high math doesn't necessarily mean you can have a low verbal.

Any comments on how the Analytical Writing Score factors into our applications. In 90% of the Full disclosure charts I've seen this section isn't included. Though I did read on one school's site that a 5 was regarded as a prerequisite for admission. It has only been around for a few years right? So perhaps schools are waiting to determine what score on the AW section corresponds to success in grad school.

I am inept at anything mathmatical...i will be lucky to ever break a 600

I took my GREs in 2002 before the analytical writing section was introduced. My scores were 690V, 540Q, and 660Subject (with ony 2 week's prep). I applied to 2 very competitive programs, interviewed at both, and was offered admission at one. (I was not a good match for the program that didn't accept me -- the feeling was mutual.)

My psych GPA was 4.0, but my overall undergrad GPA was closer to 3.4 (I was a bio major). A master's in counseling (GPA 4.0), I'm sure, helped matters. I had very strong LORs and IMO an equally compelling personal statement.

that's what i think too. i don't think the schools know what to do with the analytical score.

will the analytical writing section change in the new GRE scheduled for late 2007?
