As a freshman/sophomore, I would work 4-6 hours a week. But now that I'm a senior, no need to worry about my classes anymore, so I've been pulling out 10-15 hours.

as a grad student in a biochemistry lab....I work a lot... working ~65 hrs/week on a 20 hrs/week paycheck, talking about cheap labor :caution:...

Undergrad, about 30hrs/wk. As a graduate student currently, 20hrs/wk besides full time course load (humanities master's).

10 hours paid per week, 10 hours for credit per week

I liked your quote because as a Postdoc I can really agree with the 60+ hr work week for pennies

🙄

During my summers in undergrad I worked 168 hrs/week and I took a full-time course load. It wasn't that bad except I had to walk 3 miles to work and school, in the snow, up hill both ways. 😀

How can it be uphill both ways...

I graduated in 2013 and have been working 50+ hours per week as an ER scribe since.

You're going to have to specify whether this is while taking a full course-load or while working full-time if you want the poll to represent what I think you actually want it to get at.

How can you even have time to walk to work/school if you work the full 24 hours 7 days a week? Do you have like an on call thingy or you just trolling?

No, not trolling. Just joking around- I tried to come up with the most stereotypically-exaggerated example for fun. 😉

Sophomore, 16-18 credits per semester. I generally work 40-50 hours per week. Less during breaks.

No offense, but the poll at the opening of this thread is pretty much worthless. There are far too many variables to consider that the data is meaningless. I would view someone working 10-15 hours a week with a full time course load differently than someone who does the same and spends the rest of their time drinking Mountain Dew and reading SDN all day.

Also, define "work" (and please don't respond with the physics definition). Does work mean work for pay, school work, research, all of the above, etc.?

Actually the initial motivation was to see if pre-meds work in general. If they do, then working obviously looks better than not working and I don't want adcoms to think that I am a slob. I need to compete with everyone else 🙂 I've been guilty for not working and being privileged. I'm 19 and my parents are paying for everything, this has been making me very guilty. I need a job.

Dude you shouldn't work just to look good for medical school. It's something you should do to learn to support yourself and gain experience/skills that will carry you through the rest of your life. Even $7.25 at McDonalds teaches you a lot about how life works and what's expected of you.

For the poll, I'm not sure if 20 hours/week is 16-20 hours or 20-28 hours. But that's how much I work during the semester (typically with ~15-17 credits/semester).

Also, what do they select if they worked 29 hours per week? :angelic:

Worked two jobs in high school, one full time and one part time. It was pretty draining but it taught me a lot about time mgmt. Nowadays, I work less than part time (12-15 hrs) every week.

freshman, 18 credits, work about 12 hrs/week, volunteer 30 hrs/week + research(avg about 8 hrs/week)

Are you talking about when we were all undergraduates? If that's the case I worked around 30 (20 hours working research, 10 hours volunteering). I do however think some people are better adapt to handling that with a full course load than others. My mom made me get a job at 16 and have been employed ever since.

Otherwise as a non-trad I work 40-50 hours as a clinical lab scientist and around 10-15 hours volunteering.

I worked 40-50hr/wk during summers and school breaks. My parents have always said school and sports are my "job" during the school year. (Track was ~30hr/wk, so I was completely fine with that.) Since graduation last May, I've worked 20hr/wk PT; during my free time I babysit, grade tests/quizzes/etc and do most of the housework for my parents. If you don't work I doubt it's a big deal - hardly anyone at my UG worked during the school year and I haven't heard of that being an issue at job/school/whatever interviews. Just be sure you have something (hobby, full time club, research) that you can talk about during interviews so you don't sound like a lazy bum. 😉

Gettin fat off GI Bill.
8 hours of A chem reasearch/ wk

They were obviously joking bro! Chillax! He said he walked uphill BOTH ways too. 🙄

During undergrad I worked 20 hours a week, athletics took up 35-40 hours per week, volunteered about 3-4 hours per week, plus a few other non-academic activities. (Currently applying as a non-trad).

You were not borne in the US, were you? 😉

You can take different routes just to make it more interesting 😛

I'm a freshmen doing 15 credits and working 36 hours in 4 days. It sounds crazy but its actually pretty manageable.

Currently I "work" (read - dick around on the internet) 40hrs/week. While in school I worked 25-30hrs/week and worked in a research lab for 10hrs/week. My course load was usually between 16-20 credits/semester.
