I was curious how many people are choosing Osteopathic medical schools because they want to study Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) and the Osteopathic approach to medicine, versus those who basically are using it as a fallback in case they can't get into allopathic schools, versus those who want to live in a particular town and don't care what letters follow their name.

It seems as though there is very little discussion about osteopathy per se in the pre-medical forums, and a whole lot of discussion about "what are my chances" and "who's on the wait list" and so forth. I guess getting in is kind of important but I'm wondering why almost no one discusses the actual field that we are trying to enter. 🙂

I only applied to Osteopathic Medical schools because I loved the DO's I shadowed, the osteopathic philosophy, and I wanted to learn OMM.

Can't wait to see the flaming?

I don't really discriminate between the two (MD and DO), I just wanted to go to the school that would provide me with the most opportunity. With that said, my top choices were Wayne and U of M (I am MI resident). Waitlisted at both of those, but I am accepted at MSUCOM. MSUCOM is a great school, with plenty of residencies right in MI (most MSUCOM graduates seem to stay in MI for residency). I would certainly choose it over many out of state MD schools, and I would probably choose it over MSU CHM as well (but I don't really have to worry about that, cause CHM didn't even interview me)!

I interviewed at both. I'll let you know when I make my decisions.

This poll has negative implications depending on which one you choose.

I am going DO cause

(1) It will get me where I want to go (Physician)
(2) It is equal to an MD degree
(3) Slight bonus learning OMM (I don't plan to be a Cardiologist-scientist and doing OMM).
(4) It will be interesting to be slightly different with a DO degree.

-------

Downside:

(1) It is an uphill battle trying to proove you are just as good as any other physician (but others have done that and are doing that- Underdogs sometimes get motivated to do more and to go that extra mile).
(2) Being surrounded by people who don't want to be DOs cause they case about the initials.
(3) All those hardcore DO people.. that think they are better than MDs, and other professions (big turn off)
(4) OHhhh yeah.. all the schools opening that will just dillute the quality of DOs trained. The good thing about schools like MSU, DMU, CCOM, TCOM, NJCOM is there high quality of education and reputation. I hope that the better schools will try to get LCME accredited soon.

I didn't really know what a D.O. was up until my junior year of college. I got the pleasure, during that time, to shadow a great doctor. While she was FP and I am mainly interested in ER, I was astounded by the way she treated her patients. This caused me to go out and learn more about the practice which, in turn, caused me fall in love with it. Up until that point, I just wanted to become a doctor.

There should be a "I want to be a doctor." option. I picked other. I don't care about MD/DO, I want to go to the school that will help me become the best doctor possible.

MSUCOM is a great school. They are very supportive of their students, and I see a lot of comraderie in their class. I go to CHM-but I interviewed at both schools (and Wayne state as a matter of fact). I chose CHM because I wanted to do the problem based learning they offer in second year, I wanted more of a break in the summer between year 1 and 2, and with CHM I had a better chance of matching into a community based program in Lansing for years 3 and 4. Other than that there is little difference between the two schools because they share first year classes. CHM and COM students get along, although I have to say we don't study together for the most part. But I participate in a weekly study group with COM students and I really enjoy it. COM and CHM administration seem to have a bit of conflict-they don't get along very well with each other for whatever reason (I didn't realize that until I started school!) But CHM and COM students don't let it affect us-we constantly share study materials, etc...

It looks like you omitted OSU-COM. I'm sure we can blame diffuse neuronal apoptosis secondary to acute ethanol intoxication.

Okaaay.

Just as long as you don't forget how to say this in plain English, too. 🙂

I perceive it like this. Osteopathic schools are a little more lenient with there acceptances because of the primary care focus. I've always wanted to be primary care or ER anyhow. I also want to work in a more rural setting since I'm a small town resident. So this seemed like a logical approach for me and my family. I could get into an M.D. school I know that I could because I have friends with lesser credentials but how long would I have to wait is the question. How many times do I reapply before I finally gain an acceptance. I have a friend who applied for times before he got in. I think he wants to be a gynecologist but he probably should have gone D.O. and been finished with school by now. I also know people are going to talk negative about the training and what not but I've been lucky in that I never really cared what people think. Its about what makes me and my family happy. The rest is of no real consequence to me.

Oh by the way I know my comments are incorrectly punctuated, but I just got off work and I'm to tired to care about that either.
