Does anyone have any information/opinions about these two post bacs? Is anyone going/has gone to these programs? I am applying to both and I am wondering which one should get the edge when I decide where to go. Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I'd vote for PSU over U of O, based on the experience of a friend who did her postbac at PSU, and based on familiarity with Eugene & a bunch of U of O grads.

I like Portland's program structure, and its proximity to OHSU. I also like the school's smaller size, which makes me more optimistic about faculty recommenders. I should disclose that I like the city a great deal more than Eugene for a bazillion reasons.

U of O will get the job done. You wouldn't be making a mistake to go there. But quite honestly I see no tangible advantage of going to U of O vs. going to Corvallis or somewhere like Reed.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the advice...I was leaning towards PSU because of that very reason. I think it is important for me to have a smaller student body so that it will be a little easier to develop a relationship with professors for recommendations. I also read about PSU and its post-bac program in "Getting into Medical School," in which one nontrad. student (history professor) goes there and ends up getting into medical school...Obviously, it isn't the school that got her in, but as a history major, knowing that she succeeded there is reassuring.

I am an Oregon grad student who spent last summer attending classes at PSU and I couldn't believe the dilapidated facilities! I'm also not so certain that the classes would necessarily be smaller at PSU. I too prefer Portland to Eugene, but since most of my life will be spent on campus I have concluded that 2 years in relative luxury is preferable to the fabulous surroundings of The Rose City.

I like Eugene and it definitely has no shortage of opportunities for gaining clinical experience. That said, if you are looking for a structured postbac program with real support, I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. I don't personally know the current "pre-health" advisor but the fact that they only have one person charged with advising all the thousands of students with career objectives in dentistry, medicine, OT, PT, podiatry, optometry, etc. should tell you something.

University of Oregon's Post bacc program... my biggest mistake.
All the prereq classes are 100-200 students! So getting attention from the professors and even TAs is a fight.
There are very little opportunities for research (and employment in general). Academic advisers are confused at best. No post bacc community. The city of Eugene is pretty much a mud pit.

I'm in the process of transferring to anywhere but here.

Thanks for the info...I was deciding between this school and another. I'm from the Midwest and would be relocating my family to attend there...are you from that area or did you go there specifically for that program?
