I was wondering if anyone had any resources or contacts that I could use to find housing while doing rotations at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It would be for my girlfriend (who is doing civilian rotations) and I from August to November.

I have looked at previous posts on housing in the area on SDN and it seems Ghent or Suffolk have an average commute and are nicer areas to live in.

Any other places to look at?

Thanks

The problem is the tunnel(s) from Ghent. If you can find a place to rent in Suffolk for that time it would be OK. If you can find a place to rent, the Port Norfolk area of Portsmouth is actually pretty nice and safe as is the waterfront area of downtown (although I'd imagine you'd pay a premium for being there).

I wouldn't throw away the downtown area of portsmouth (well at least parts of it anyway). You can also look to the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake as it's a pretty nice area and not a bad commute.

If you're going for an "easy" rotation then I'd try to avoid tunnels to downtown Norfolk as you'd be hitting prime traffic time; however, if you're going for something that has early morning rounds and late days it would be an easy commute.

If you haven't already you might try contacting the GME office at Portsmouth to see if they have contact info for housing. (If you're on orders one less expensive way to do it would be to stay at the Navy Lodge at the Shipyard in Portsmouth or even the one near the main Navy base)

I don't remember a Navy lodge at the shipyard, but the area around Scott Annex (NNSY) is best avoided, regardless. The Navy Lodge by the NOB is reasonable, but still involves a tunnel.

Are you doing military rotations? If you are on orders, the billeting at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (actually located just down Effingham), is pretty nice. J-Rad, I don't know when you were there, but I stayed at the Navy Lodge at NNSY in 2008 and it was new and nice (off base in that area...different story and should be avoided). The NOB Navy Lodge requires a trip through the midtown tunnel...NOT something I would want to do everyday at rush hour. However, it IS close to Ghent which has some great restaurants/shop/vibe.

Thanks for the advice. I am doing one AD rotation but 2 others that are civilian. With my girlfriend and I both in the area, it seems to be just simpler to find one place while we are down there. Looks like a place in the Norfolk area is looking good minus that Downtown tunnel. Hopefully my hours will be good enough to avoid some traffic!!

I was an intern at Portsmouth. I cannot stress how much you want to avoid the tunnels. You really should look for lodging at the shipyard down Effingham if possible as suggested or perhaps something in Suffolk. While there is more going on in Ghent and Norfolk, tunnels can seriously add an hour to a 10 minute commute in the AM and PM. I had intern colleagues who thought they were cool living in VA Beach that hated it after one week. Just my two cents...
