Positive Feedback from Program

I interviewed at a program and received positive feedback via e-mail right away. Basically, they said that I was a great candidate and they asked that I consider the program. This is definitely my number one choice...I still have a few more interviews, but I feel that I will be ranking them at the top of my list. Should I respond by saying that I plan on ranking them #1 or hold off on this? I mentioned during my interview that I really like the program, however, I didn't comment on the rank list. I am not really sure what the etiquette is. Do programs routinely send out emails to candidates they are interested in?

Yes, programs routinely send emails or make phone calls to candidates--they want to maximize their chances of filling within the match, and making applicants feel welcome and wanted is part of that effort. You can reply and state your appreciation for the feedback and your interest in the program. Wait until you've finished all your interviews to let the PD know where that program falls on your rank list IF YOU WANT TO. There's no obligation on either side to say anything specific. Above all, keep an open mind as you are visiting other programs, weigh the pros and cons of each, and pay more attention to your gut feelings than to anything a PD, coordinator, or resident may say in their correspondence.

2 years ago when my husband and I were applying, he was interviewing at one of the top programs in his specialty and was pleasantly surprised to find an email from the PD waiting for him when he got home. Basically, an email stating that he's an excellent candidate that would have a great chance at matching if he ranked them #1. He was feeling all warm and fuzzy until he saw the time stamp of the email read 9:15 am, i.e. before he had even interviewed. They probably sent that email to a bunch of people...who knows, maybe even everyone.

I'm not saying that's what happened to you, I'm just advising to be cautious interpreting the things you're told this year because you never know what the intentions are. And there is plenty of time to figure out who your #1 program is and to let them know.

That's really bad. Did your husband end up at that program? or worse yet, not ending up there after ranking it #1?

Haha, nope. He didn't even like it much anyway, and the email thing was the icing on the cake. I think it was in the late middle of his/our rank list.
