Hi all,
I am a bit concerned about my letters on the transcript. My Overall GPA and science GPA is 3.8. However, I do have a C in english (my only C) and 2 Q drops in honors calculus and biochem. For those who don't know what Q drop is, it is dropping a course after the official enrollment day (for my school it's the 12th class day) but before the day they give out W.

How much are the C and the Qs gonna affect me on my application. Does the admission commitee gonna think that i can't take challenging courses since I Q drop honors math and have a C in english. (i'm not a native speaker by the way)

Any advice is appreciated.

Take all three classes over before you even think about applying. Unless you don't mind D.O. schools.

I still have no idea what a Q drop is. This being said amusing that a Q drop does not expel you from school, you will be fine. A lot of people have Cs on their transcript and really with computers who needs english anyway?

I did retake the biochem and got an A, but i can't take the honors calculus. The reason i have that Q drop is that I mistakenly signed up for that class during my freshmen year and when I found out it was too late to do a normal drop. On my school website(UT Austin), they are saying Q means "dropping without a possible academic penalty". But to my understanding, every drop that appears on your transcript is gonna hurt you, correct?
And I just really don't feel like retaking english because i'm graduating...

Assuming "Q" drops don't murder your GPA(it looks like they don't considering you still have 3.8) you should be fine. Many(maybe most) people applying to and attending medical school have dropped classes on their transcripts. Two classes is also not a lot, if you had 6 or more then it might be a problem. As far as not retaking calc as long as you have all pre-reqs done then don't worry about it.

With a GPA of 3.8, if those are the only flaws on your transcript, you have nothing to worry about.

Assuming you meet the pre-reqs for the medical schools you are applying to, then you are fine. Don't stress about that. Get the rest of your application - i.e. clinical volunteering, leadership and EC's in order. And rock the MCAT.

The difference between a Q and a W is just when you drop. The deadline for a Q drop is usually something like 3 weeks into the class, at least for my school.

To be honest with you, I have no idea what does Q stand for.....
I'm from UT Austin by the way.
