More of a fact finding question than anything at this point, but is is possible to do 2 fellowships back to back? Since most (or maybe all, not sure) fellowships are 1 yr would it be possible to do a fellowship and then do another fellowship right after that?

I know most will say "you won't want to spend that much time doing fellowships" and that may be true but I'd like to know if it's even a possibility or if there is some funding/admin/Medicare/etc reason that prevents you from doing something such as a US fellowship fellowship followed by international med for example (or whatever... which specific fellowships don't really matter).

I feel like I read something about funding issues if you start, for example, a 3 yr residency and then for some reason switch specialties into something that has a longer residency (like 4 or 5) but not sure if that relates to fellowships or if you can do as many as you want. Any ideas?

In EM, sure you could, not sure why you'd want to.

Ignore the "funding issue." It's irrelevant for fellowships. All accredited fellowships, regardless of specialty have the same reduced funding compared to residency.

The research fellow when I was a resident finished his 2-year research fellowship (w/ MPH as part of it) and went directly into another 2-year critical care fellowship. He was EM/IM trained, so he has done 5 years of residency and then 4 years of fellowship, assuming he finished the crit care one.

Ah, gotcha. I guess I was thinking more along the lines in the comparison of if you get the first fellowship it would be funded but the second might not. Comparing that to if you locked in a 3 yr residency (like medicine or whatever) and your funding "clock" as I've heard it called is set for a 3 yr residency but then after year 1 you decided to switch to surgery or something like that the funding issue comes because you were only allotted 3 yrs, not the 5 for surgery or whatever. Didn't know if there was a "clock" or whatever the true term for it is with fellowships but if they are like you are saying I'm assuming it's not the same...

Ok, cool... that's kinda what I was talking about. So it can be done... and I'm assuming he never mentioned any "issues" (other than being a resident/fellow for 9 yrs) with doing that?

Most fellowships are subsidized by you working as an attending at reduced pay for the department.
