Is it possible to scramble into a spot? My friend who is in the Anesthesia Student Group in school said that some programs have a lot of slots like 20 or something. Is this true? If so, is it likely that some will go unfilled and one can scramble? Im not sure how the IMGs fit into this, or who will get first dibs on a scramble. Thanks.

BTW, Im a second year. Is it too early to be thinking about this?

Your friend is delusional and grossly misinformed if they think scrambling is a viable alternative. It is a last resort for those who don't match and are still trying to salvage the year. It's a free-for-all, a race against time, a situation whose outcome could definitely be related to who's helping you get a spot (mentors and deans). Several years ago there were many spots available in anesthesia that one could easily get. That's not the case now. Look at the match statistics from this past year, there were a small amount of spots left, but they likely wouldn't be where you would want to go. Get the idea of scramblling out of your mind, figure out which field you want to go into, and then prepare yourself to apply in that field. Whether programs take IMGs is variable, however those that don't match well would probably take whatever qualified applicants are left no matter the background.
