I am really interested in going to a post-bac program, my reasons are:

a. The schools I want to attend for medical school all offer them, and have programs that guarantee admission, granted the student meet certain requirements
b. It will give me a warm up of what medical school will be like
c. Most importantly, I feel this will make my academic profile a bit stronger than what it is currently.

If your interested, what are your reasons? And do you feel they are beneficial?
🙂

I could be wrong but I thought the only program that meets requirement a.) is Temple.

Temple does, UMDNJ offers a linkage program, and University of Penn and Drexel have partnerships with area universities to help you get into to medical schools.

I was aware of partnerships just not automatic linkages. Thanks for the info on Drexel and Penn I'll look into them. I'm not URM so those other type programs don't apply to me. I am considering a post bac though if this application cycle doesn't go well. What is your top choice littlemissdr?

My top choice would have to be University of Penn, but second choice would be Temple. I am really interested in the post bac program also because the application process can be expensive, and I really want to narrow it down, and save some money if I can. What schools have you applied to? and what is your number one?
🙂

I did a post bacc at drexel. I can tell you that it most definitely did not have any partnerships...and none of the post bacc programs offered @ drexel do. The only one that has anything is the IMS program...which is a one year cert program where you take a first year with the med students through videoconferencing. If you have a B or above you get an interview automatically at drexelmed but not an acceptance.

Saving money isn't a good reason to attend a postbac. I suggest you visit sdn's postbac forum.

Really? I will keep that in mind.

Are you talking about a post-bacc or an SMP (Special Master's Program)? A post-bacc is for people who graduate undergrad without the pre-reqs for med school (career-changers, non-traditional students, etc.). An SMP are for people who've already completed the med school pre-reqs but need to improve their academic credentials to prove they can make it in med school.

SMP students usually take courses with med students while post-bacc students are usually taking Chem I, Bio I, and all the other pre-reqs.

Anyway, SMP should be your LAST ditch effort to get into med school. The reason is simple -- a lot of people get into an SMP and do poorly. And poorly doesn't mean failing out. It sometimes means getting a 3.0. That hurts their chances of getting into med school. SMPs are competitive and difficult and therefore should only be an option if you've already applied to med school and realized that you can't get in without proving you can do the work.
