anyone doing a post bac at University of Houston? If so, I have a couple of questions.
1st-whats the difference b/w appying as a post bac or as a non-degree seeking student? I know that post bacs give you a certificate, but Im only interested in taking about 15-18 extra hours to improve my GPA. So Im not really interested in the certificate.
2nd-how is the school? How is traffic in Houston?
3rd-I know alot of post bacs require a year to complete. I only want to take a couple of classes over that I got C's in. Is the post bacc for me? Or do I just need to apply as a non degree seeking student? It seems that in my case, there isn't a difference b/w going post bacc or applying to take a couple of classes. This is where the confusion lies.
Any info would be great. Thanks alot

Many of my fellow classmates took classes at UofH when they did not want to take the class at Rice. We all felt that their classes are pretty easy! I dont think traffic is bad over there, but then again I was never over there for a long time.

A post-bacc is an option for those with a bachelors who want to go back for a second bachelors. You seem more the non-degree seeking grad student. I think the most important question is do you need financial assistance? If you register as a non-degree seeking student, you won't be able to apply for FAFSA. You're in the exact same boat as I am. I'm taking a few upper division Bio classes at UH as well. Traffic around downtown stinks in my opinion. Just be sure to beat rush hour! 🙂

Doing postbacc work does not always mean that you want to go back for a second bachelors....It simply refers to the fact that you are taking undergrad courses after receiving a bachelors degree.........
To the OP: Dont ever take courses at UH (downtown)....that place is garbage!

I lived in Hou. for 2 year. Very hot, a lot of traffic, school is in a questionable part of town, don't know anything about the program though. Be ready to commute with major traffic.

Yes, you will get mugged if you have an evening class. Unless your a ninja I wouldn't be caught there after dark. Parking at UH sucks too as you have to walk 17 miles to class. The best part of UofH is that when you walk out of class through the on campus parking lots there are always a line of cars that slowly follow you to see if you are going to open a free space for them. It is really the most annoying thing.

If you live close to UofH (like near the med center/Rice or West U or North Kirby...etc...) then you do not have to worry about the rush hour traffic on 59, I-45, or 288.
Being that I am from Los Angeles, I do not think traffic is all that bad (relatively speaking). You just need to try and plan around that traffic.

It has been 5 years since I've lived in the big H so traffic patterns have changed. When I lived there was a ton of construction...if I remember correctly UH was under construction too so I'm sure it is better now....still...it was so strange to have dozens and dozens of cars nipping at your heels, begging and pleading for you to allow them to park in your space on the way out of class.

Actually there is still construction everywhere in Houston (was there in May)......I guess you can say that that is just a staple of that city....CONSTRUCTION.

While I was an undergrad at Rice they closed down part of 59.....Only in Houston does stuff like that happen....And now that they have the light rail and are contemplating its expansion more construction is on the way.

i'm a post bac at uh-d.

have no clue what the implications of that compaed to non degree are. the only difference i know of is that you have to supply prior transcripts for post bac whereas non degrees can just sally in from the street.

the parking and traffic at uh-d isn't too bad, on scale. you can always park further south and hop the light rail (a semester pass costs about 30 bucks and gets you on the buses) straight to the front door. at uh central, it's a nightmare. you pay 150 for a parking permit and very often can't find any spots anywhere, and they're diligent with those boots after 3 violations.

i find no major differences in the quality of the professors. they suck in both locations.
