Hi,
I am looking for a post bac program that will help improve my chances of getting into medical school. Ideally the program would be short (preferably 1 year, 2 years tops) and located on the west coast. Anyone out there is SDN land have any ideas?
Thanks
AW

Scripps College in Claremont has post bac program. That program is 1.5-2 years depending on your math background.

USC has one- the max they allow for completion is 24 months.

I called Scripps, but was turned off by the advisor. She said that the "ideal" applicant must have some work/real life experience. That is, they are looking for people over 25 years of age.

I didn't even bother with USC. At 28K a year for tuition alone, that program is definitely out of my reach.

I suggest you look into CSULA or some other Cal State. (Although many Cal States are NOT taking post-bac students!) I'm graduating from UCLA in June, and will begin my post-bac work in the summer at SFSU. I've heard so many good things about SFSU. If you've got any questions, PM me 🙂 .

In Nor Cal:

Mills College in Oakland has a formal program that seems to have a good rep and gets people into good places. It is co-ed even though Mills is a women's college. It is private and expensive though.

Cal State Hayward has a program that looked pretty good when I looked into it a few years back. They have a special post-bac advisor and I believe they handle your recs for you too if you want. And it's a CSU so it's hella cheap.

If you just need a couple of classes and not a whole post-bac program you could look into taking them through the UC Extension programs.

I've posted about this before and it's not a formal postbacc program, but UCSD has a nice non-degree graduate student program set up that's extremely flexible.

I know that SMC (Santa Monica College) has a "version" of a post-bacc program, so if you are considering $$$, it may be a good option to check out. Also, West LA College does not have one, though you can complete the pre-req's pretty fast (classes are longer during the day, and some of the labs go over into the weekend as well). Umm, also Southern California University of Health Sciences (associated with Cleveland Chiropractic College) has a one-year accelerated program for people who need these course for some medical/health related career. If you get on the site, it will probable talk mostly about Chiropractic profession, though I have known people who attended this program. It is a bit costly, though it you want to do it all in one year, than go for it.

I believe there is also one in N.Cal, think it is called New College of Caliornia or so. It is an accelerated program (do your entire Bio, Chem, OChem, Phy) in like 5 months or so. This does not include electives, and is a heavy amount of information in a short time. Though, it was created for people who are working full-time, and are seeking to change into a medical or health career. Believe it would run you between $5000-$8000 for the whole course, excluding living expenses. The courses are on weekends only, Sat and Sun from 9-6.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Actually, SMC does not offer a post-bac program, as it were, but you can easily complete all your pre-med classes in less than two years and the school is looked upon favorably by many adcomms - I did my post bac there after getting a BA in sociology - my interviewer at Johns Hopkins had actually heard of SMC and was impressed that I'd done well there. There's my .02.

That's interesting, because aamc.org has SMC listed as a formal post-bacc program. Always perked my curiosity, knowing it was a community college. Well, there you go! 😛

SMC also has a real anatomy class, with cadavers and everything!

Well maybe something changed recently, but I went in in 2000 to find out about a formal post-bacc, and they just gave me classes to take, but didn't mention an actual program for it. Whatever, it worked!

I am glad to hear that...plus, you can go wrong livin' in Santa Monica (or close to it).

Has anyone here spoken with CAL STATE FULLERTON? God, I hope they are taking post-bacs this year. I heard they might be doing cut-backs or something. Does anyone know about Long beach?

I tried applying to Fullerton and Long Beach through CSU Mentor, but couldn't. I don't think they are taking post bacs. You should call their admissions office...

why couldn't you? what problems were you getting?

I don't know what Im going to do if I don't get into D-school and Cal States LB and Fullerton don't take post-bacs. Does anyone in Socal have a plan?
