Hello,

I'm new to SDN and figured this community is the best place to get my answer. Sorry if this is not the correct place to post this thread.

I'm currently a rising senior at a large university. I am an informatics major (information systems) and a pre-health professions cognate. I switched to my cognate from business last year due to interning at a hospital and realizing I wanted to become a doctor. Since I am late in the game for premed, I am deciding to do a non-science degree post-bacc program to finish my prereqs and prepare for the MCAT.

I currently have a 3.45 cgpa (which should be rising with my semester abroad grades coming in) and have taken only two science classes that are on the MCAT (psychology - got an A, and biology - got a B-). I will have to take chem and two non MCAT sciences (anatomy and physiology). I am planning to get EMT certified next semester and am involved in many organizations as well.

I am hoping for some insight in what I should be doing to prepare for the application process and also what are my chances of getting into a top formal post-bacc program?

Thank you.

Don't bother with the EMT cert unless you actually plan to work as an EMT. Your time will be better spent volunteering and shadowing.

Thanks for the advice. I signed up for EMT because it is a GPA booster and I will be able to use the skill for a student organization which is an EMS for local events.

I think you should go for it--although it's hard to say for sure because they will ask you for your SAT score. (Which is weird right? Something we took in high school..but anyway). Most people will probably say your gpa is "too low" , but even if it is on the lower side (average for the top post bacs I think is about a 3.7) you still might have a shot. I had a 3.41 cgpa 🙂, although my SAT scores were decently high with a perfect score in one of the sections (which probably made up for it).

You could also ask the front office--oftentimes they'll be quite realistic if they think you are a long shot. I would advise taking some math classes and if you haven't completed the english requirements, do so now before applying. Get A's in those, and your chances could shoot up.

Thanks! I have taken some math courses (finite, stats, math of informatics). Additionally, my cgpa wouldn't be so low if it wasn't for the first semester of freshman year. If I were to calculate that semester out, I would have a 3.73 cgpa (pretty crazy that one semester was). I'll probably use that as an argument. SAT was 1680 with a 680 in math. Thanks again for the input.
