Ok so currently my gpa is 3.01. I have about 40 credits left in my undergrad and if I maintain a 3.85-4.0 the red of my time I can bring my cumulative gpa to around 3.3. I don't plan on applying for a couple years because I do want to use my degree (high school math teacher) to get involved with the school. I will also begin to volunteer/shadow once I get my first career underway. This also will give me time to make sure that I want to become a physician. My question is assuming a 3.3 gpa and having some volunteer experience AND getting involved within the school, what are my chances to getting accepted into a decent formal post bacc program? (I prefer the formal post bacc because I would rather have the structure)

Couldn't tell from your post, will you have already taken your pre-med reqs when you graduate?

@meander when I graduate from undergrad I will have completed no pre-med pre reqs

OK.

With a 3.3 cGPA, you will be very borderline for the good career changer postbacs. You will need at least a few of these other factors going for you: having gone to an elite undergrad school (think Ivies, top LACs), very high SAT score, a unique career, a masters or PhD. The formal programs are in the business of getting people into top MD schools and they have their pick of many people with 3.8/3.9 who went to top schools. While it will certainly be possible for you to get into med school in some way, those programs might not be interested in helping you get there. In the same vein, it might be better for you to get yourself there (DIY postbac) than to spend time doing all the things that would be necessary to even gain admission to a formal postbac.

I don't know what "getting involved within the school" means but I don't think there is any admissions advantage to being involved with the postbac program's institution, if that was your implication.

Chances would be excellent.

A lot of post-bacc programs have cutoffs in the 3.5 range.

If you can't find one, do what I did and just enroll in a regional college (make your own post-bacc)
