Is it better to be deferred than waitlisted at a school post interview? If deferred, what should the applicant do to best bump him towards an acceptance decision?

Waitlist means that you have been reviewed by adcom and are deemed accepted to the medical school but are awaiting a seat
Deferred means you havent been reviewed which implies you have a lower priority for such review as compared to other applicants.

In either case, there is little you can do except, as all applicants must, assume you are rejected and continue to enhance your record and application

Does interview performance generally factor into the decision to defer?

I would like to think so. It was definitely not my best interview performance, given it was my first interview. The school that I am deferred at stated it will be reviewing our apps on a monthly basis and encouraged us to send updates to help with their decisions.

Depends upon the school, but I believe that interviews will make or break you

I might have misjudged, but I thought my interview went well (on the way out, my interviewer mentioned they’d love to have me at their school, not sure if they just said that to be nice though). I’m definitely on the lower side for stats though.

Interviewers are trained to be polite. Do you really think they'd tell you "No way I'm letting you in my school?"

Most people are terrible judges of their own interviews.
