So I had an interview that went really well; I felt really good about it at the end. So after all was said and done, the interviewer looks at me and says "you know, I wouldn't worry too much about all this if I were you, you are very likely took get into this school". When I finally said goodbye to her she even said "I'll see you around next year!".

I don't know what took make of it. I can't tell if she was being sincere or facetious or what. Has this happened to any of you guys?

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'm just trying to participate dude.

@ wink and gun: lol no, no wink and gun.

Wasn't supposed to be mean. I'm saying that it means nothing; even if you do end up getting in.

From personal experience last year, I had an alumnus interviewer at UMich who basically said something like that to me, and I was really excited. Decision day came and I was lower tier waitlisted (aka never ever getting in). It was really unfair for the interviewer to give me definite hope for acceptance when really I wasn't even close (and it was an open file interview, so he saw my whole application).

I wouldn't put any stock into what an interviewer says after an interview. The interview is a small portion of the overall application, and a lot of other factors will go into the decision. It was pretty unprofessional for the interviewer to say that, actually, but I guess it depends on how much of your application he saw and how much of an impact he has on the decision (i.e. at that school, do interviewers just submit a report and they're done, or do they attend the committee meeting and defend you in front of the adcoms?). I really do hope that you end up with an acceptance, but I would try to refrain from false hope.

I've gotten that from interviewers twice. Both resulted in waitlists. The interviews that I thought went the worst? Accepted. It means nothing. Don't let it get your hopes up.

Cool sorry. Too bad the interviewers don't decide if you are going to get in. They just write a summary of you and then you go on to the committee. Then they look at everything, maybe vote on you or give you a score (depends on the school). Hopefully it is high enough or you get enough votes to be admitted. Otherwise you are SOL.

I suggest you read LizzyM's ladder or stair analogy. I don't remember which it is. I think it is stairs. Maybe someone else can quote it or point the OP in the right direction.

Got this once (was actually during the interview). Waitlisted.

To be fair, I've also had it the other way, where my interviewer says something like "hey, you'd be a good fit here, I hope you come here" and then got accepted. So yeah, it certainly doesn't mean you'll get in, but it doesn't mean you won't either.

I was told by and interviewer, "I hope you chose to come to this school"

I was flat out rejected there, not even a waitlist

So yeah, stuff an interviewer says at the end pretty much means nothing

LizzyM's staircase analogy can be found here

Interviewers do not solely make the decision on your file, but I believe they can play a strong role in advocating for your acceptance (or rejection) during the adcom voting process. If you strongly impressed your interviewer (who is a fellow adcom), then the interviewer may adamantly vouch for your candidacy and maybe move you up a step or two on LizzyM's staircase.

I had an interviewer tell me I was perfect for the school and that I said all the right things

and...I got into the school, so take it as a good sign but nothing concrete

Makes sense...well I suppose that, from what I've been able to gather, the answer is it doesn't really matter what your interviewer says. No false hope. Thanks for your responses, everyone.
