I thought it would be interesting to see if all of us hear back from the same programs, or do different programs have different communications with each of the applicants (if any). We don't need to specifically post what emails/phone calls actually said (if one doesn't want to), but it would be interesting to see which programs send post-interview communication and if that means translates to anything (chances) in the grand scheme of things. I know in the past, people say don't gauge your chances from the post-interview communication, but what do we have to lose by compiling it at one place?
 
Personally, the only feedback I've received is when I made the initial contact with PD's. Beyond that I know Mayo, a few of the upstate SUNY's, and the Ohio programs have given out some prematch offers.

By the end of this day you'll have like 8000 views and maybe 1 reply at best. Maybe someone from last year wants to chime in.
 
Do prematch offers violate the match agreement?
 
Straight up offers or something like "hey it'd be great if you came here!"? I'd love to get one of the latter. I want to feel wanted. 🙁

I know pre-match is a frequent phenomenon in IM. Is it the same in Neurology ? Is it only for IMG's ?

Uhhh, are you asking with regard to US MD's?

It's not a violation for them to offer indep candidates (IMG's and osteopathic grads) prematch spots to my knowledge...

Overall I get the vibe that neuro programs are not quite as big on giving candidates unsolicited feedback compared to other specialties, but again, maybe someone from last year (or even this year) wants to share, even anonymously via Typhoon.

from reading the guidelines and talking to some directors of another specialty last month, what I got is you can tell a program you like them, they can express interest in you, but once it gets into quid-pro-quo territory [like "We will rank you for our program if you don't rank anyone else"] that's where there are really violations. It's a great way for NRMP to avoid having to mediate a bunch of he-said she-said junk.
 
You can say whatever you want to a program. You can tell them you are ranking them number one. They cannot do the same in return. They can call you and say they enjoyed having you visit. They can write you a letter saying they were impressed with your application. But they cannot tell you that you are ranked to match, or that you will have a spot.

Some do it anyway, but that is technically a match violation.

Sir, could you please tell a little about the pre-match trends in Neurology compared to IM for IMG's ?

I have heard that its difficult to get pre-match in Neurology.

Given the rarity of it in neurology, in addition to it being a gray area for the independent applicant, is there any harm in asking for a prematch, or is that a faux pas?

from what i hear prematches are not as common in neuro, although you will see them from time to time at more prestigious places that are in less desirable locations or places that have more spots. all the categorical spots filled last year. i would think advanced positions are the ones pd's fear not filling...
 
I read in other specialty forums (specially IM) about people getting calls from PD's. Is this a common practice that happens in Neurology as well? Have people gotten calls from PD's here?
 
I haven't got any call from PD...🙁
never heard in Neuro that PD calls candidates..atleast not in this forum..unless they want to offer prematch....
but they do email candidates of their interest ....anyone got such email so far??
 
Ive gotten phone calls from:
USC (within the past 2 weeks)
University of Cincinnati (within the past 2 weeks)
Ohio State (within the past 2 weeks)
- These phone calls were nice people telling me they thought I was nice and wanted me to consider them because they were considering me (ranking me highly)

Snail Mail from:
Mayo Clinic (Rochester) - seemed like it went to everyone
Washington University - seemed like it went to everyone

If you are a US MD student (4th year student) prematch is NRMP Match Violation
If you are any other student its all good, but not as likely in Neuro as IM...Still happens though especially to rockstar candidates or at less desirable places.

I don't see the harm in posting the post-interview contact stuff. Keep it vague, but I think it helps people see where they stand.

Duke (PD)
Montefiore (resident)

Email from:
Baylor
 
I got nothing from nobody. I think that easily tells me where I am on program rank lists.
 
How did you respond to feedback emails from programs that are not #1 on your ROL? My understanding is that there is little value in telling a program you are ranking them "highly" (ie not number 1).

Also, Redox, I wouldn't sweat it...We all know correspondence doesn't make or break anyone.

What did the mass email say? I didn't get that from them. Did it come from Baylor or NRMP?

I second clement, the best advice I've heard is to rank on where you want to go, not perception of where you'll be in the top ranks.
 
Ah the halcyon days of pre-match anxiety.

I'm glad to see people offering to share their experiences. I remember getting them, too.

I wholeheartedly second the advice for all of you guys and gals to take these phone calls and mailers with a grain of salt and rank where you WANT to go...not where you think you have the best chance of matching.

Email is a personal email from chief and PD received over last 2 days, not the mass email they sent out.
 
Just out of curiosity, the people who heard from PD and/or chief at Baylor, were these unsolicited emails or were they in response to your emails/notes?
 
I also received an unsolicited email from Baylor.
 
i don't know if it makes anyone feel better, but not everyone who interviewed at baylor had an interview with a chief (if that makes a difference). Also, this is SDN, land of the higher than avg board scores, obviously you'll have a higher ratio of highly desired people that get "we loved you" emails/phone calls compared to the general app pool.
If you're a US MD and your boards were hot or have some ties to the south or Texas or have pubs, odds are you heard back...Or else if you're an IMG with reaally good steps, you're also likely to get some love letters/calls. Keep in mind these folks are prob highly sought after at more than one place. All other avg Joe's just need to chill and see what happens...
 
Now that our ROL are complete and certified I am comfortable posting without the possibility of influencing others.

University of Utah from PD
Mayo Scottsdale from PD
Duke from PD/Chief Resident

While I personally appreciate some degree of contact I wish programs and applicants were both prohibited from wooing each other after interviews. One of the programs above was aggressive in fishing for reciprocal wooing, came off as arrogant.

Wildcat, was the BNI communication from the program coordinator after the interview, or did come from the PD/chief/faculty member? I received a very nice e-mail from the prog coordinator after my interview, but it seemed like it may have gone to everyone.
 
Hi Snotrat --- my unsolicited 4 above were all ones received by PDs and/or Chairs over the last month. BNI called last week, it was the PD calling to basically say the usual "We like you and would love it if you ended up here" thing.

Now that the ROL deadline is over and it's irrelevant as far as changing anything, for those who heard from Baylor, does anyone want to share whether was it a ranked to match kind of email or just general we love you email?

2-3 days before ROL were due I got an email from PD at BIDMC saying essentially that I would match there if I ranked them highly but without guaranteeing it (match violation).

I really appreciated these posts as well as the interview invites and the ROL posts. They give me a lot of perspective. Thanks guys for the whole years worth of neurology interview trail SDN love.

I wonder where this guy matched.

I've not heard from my #1, although I've heard from my #2, and a few others. How late do PD's typically wait to contact the applicant prior to ROL being due?

Yeah, how late do they wait? I haven't heard from most places in my top five.:scared:
 
Guys, not all programs contact people. And some only contact a few (fewer than their class size). I know it is the style of SDN to let everyone rile everyone else up until the whole class is ready to quit and go into custodial sciences, but please take a deep breath.

It's been more than a few years now, but I never was contacted by my top choice, and I only got a couple emails from others, which were weak and sounded like form letters. I matched just fine.

In fact, for my internship, the only people who called me and intimated I was a lock either lied or miscalculated. It was a bit of a surprise on match day, to say the least.

So don't put too much stock in these phone calls and emails.
