Does BWH, MGH or BIDMC make post-interview contacts to their top candidates?

Wonder if these programs have finished their list.

Has anyone received such contacts?

Don't know if they've finished their rank lists. I do know that at least two of these programs initiate post-interview contact with some of their applicants.

Does that mean you've been contacted by them this year or you were contacted by them in the past or you know of someone who knows of someone?

I applied at all 3 and I contacted them and they all wrote back but none of them initiated first re-contact. Maybe I am not as hot to trot as I think or maybe they just don't re-contact.

Bear in mind that just because one program does things a certain way one year does not necessarily mean they will the following year. And sometimes programs only contact a small number of applicants, if they do and you are not contacted it doesn't mean you won't match there. I would not focus on it, and it certainly should not impact your rank list.

I have only received positive contact after stoking the fires a bit. But then again, I am not hot to trot.

From what I have heard from applicants this year and my experience years ago when I applied to residency, BWH and MGH will initiate post-interview contact. I do not know about the others.

I got some BIDMC contact from the secretary after emailing her and telling her I loved the program. "Hope to work with you in the future" guess thats positive. Hope I match there.

Yeah, Joan Allin actually makes all the admission decisions.

As a general rule with the match, just remember this. Every program at which you interview has an interest in making sure you rank them #1, even if you are not high on their list. One reason is to make sure that they don't fall below you on their rank list. The second reason is that it is good PR for them if a future generation of pathologists forms a favorable opinion of them. The applicant should remember to keep this in mind when evaluating communications from programs and to look out for themselves (because that is what the programs are doing). Also, if a program doesn't understand this concept then they are clueless and unlikely to consistently do well in the match (if the above story about the email is true then that is a good example) and you probably don't want to match there anyway.

Its like fraternity/sorority rush in college. During rush you sell your house for many reasons (including those above) and that makes sure you wind up with the best pledge class. When you consistently get the best pledge class, you consistently have the best actives. When you consistently have the best actives, you consistently have alumni that are really successful after they graduate. When you have successful alumni, better quality freshman want to pledge with your house. You create a beneficial cycle. The match is no different- just replace interns with pledges, residents with actives, and pathologists in practice with alumni. The cycle works in reverse too. If a program doesn't understand this then I feel sorry for them.

They have no doubt the most thorough and knowledgeable program coordinator in the country. Anyone who wants to go there would be very wise to consider this. I interviewed there, did not end up going there, but when I contacted her 4 years later for another reason she remembered who I was and a lot about me.

A friend of mine says Beth Israel compiled a list last week and is finalizing it very soon. I am unclear what their source is on that though.

I know at least 2 of the boston programs have finalized lists/contacted people, but I'm not sure if it was initiated by the applicant or the program.

thanks for posting! I had thought most programs made their final list at the end of Jan.

When did they finalize lists/contact people?

I wonder how many contacts they make. Say if they contact their top 40 candidates and send out letters of "ranking you highly," that would pretty much mean those who don't get contacts won't make it there 😛.

Are there current residents from BIDMC/BWH/MGH who weren't contacted by these programs when they applied?

Despite all this posting though, there really hasn't been a person who said that they have been contacted by any of these programs without contacting them first. There seem to be a lot of second and third hand reports. And what's up with saying Boston programs - do you mean MGH, Brigham or BIDMC? Specifics are nice if you are going to post.

I applied last year.

MGH- received an email a couple days after interview from the asst program director saying he recieved positive feedback about me, to email him if I have any questions, etc. This was before I had a chance to write a thank you email to him. I didn't end up contacting them further. Dr. Hasserjain (sp?) seemed to be a pretty cool guy, would be good to work with.

Brigham- don't think I recieved any post-interview contact, none initiated on my end.

BID- wrote a thank you email to program and received no response. Joan Allin did respond, and I'll echo that she seems to be the most organized and pleasant coordinator I interacted with.

These programs were lower my list for personal reasons (didnt want to be in Boston) so I didn't try to contact them really. I received an email from "Partners" asking to fill out a survey on why I didn't choose them, so I'm assuming I was relatively high on one of these rank lists at least. Hope this helps.

Post-interview contact from multiple people at both BWH and MGH for me during this application cycle, without my contacting them first. Replied to PMs, but didn't want to post this because it seemed obnoxious, and the value of such information seemed questionable to me. Not that I know anything, but I'd agree with those who say not to let contact or lack of contact influence their ROL's - there are many factors affecting this process.

can't really speak to unsolicited contact for mgh, but they were the only program i received snail mail from, albeit generic sounding and probably something everyone gets.

zero point zero from bwh. oh well.

Does anyone ever actually consider changing their ROL based on post-interview contact?

I would imagine that people are likely to move a place up on the ROL following post-interview contact. It obvious doesn't make sense to move a place down because of a lack of post-interview contact.

If two places were equally good in my mind and someone from a program contacted me to say they were REALLY interested in me, then I might bump it up. Its feels good to be wanted.

It's nice to feel wanted, but then even the residency directors can't be sure who will definitely match unless you're say, #1 to #10 for a program with ten spots. There's just so much unpredictability in the process. This is my second time going through the match, and when I applied a few years back for a different specialty, I thought that the program I eventually matched at didn't like me at all.
