hey there sdn
had an interview today and was talking to some people about sending thank you's. i haven't sent any yet but was considering it.
anybody have any thoughts??
should you send a thank you note to just your interviewer? or the program director? and paper/card vs. email?
or is it all just a waste of time?
any thoughts?

just thought i'd put something out there and see what people might (or might not) have to say.

cheers
good luck to all

Hey.

I am thinking about the mandarin orange popsicles in my freezer.

should you send a thank you note to just your interviewer? or the program director?

Eh, program director probably makes the most sense. Some send them to all interviewers and the PD.

and paper/card vs. email?

Your mother would tell you that a handwritten note is the nicest.

or is it all just a waste of time?

Depends on what you are thinking of getting out of it. Most students seem to think the purpose of sending a thank you note is to increase your chances of matching. The reason for sending them is because its the polite thing to do when someone goes to some trouble to meet you.

any thoughts?

This mandarin orange popsicle is pretty damn good.

Oh and I'd suggest a search in this and the Allopathic and Pre-Allo forums...this question is an extremely common one.

thanks for the input
i'll see what i can do

There really are not hard and fast rules about this. While it is the polite and nice thing to do, in the end it will not make a significant difference in your application standing come ranking time.

So, send them if you feel good about your experience someplace and your mother taught you well, but don't expect that it will sway votes your way.

yeah no i'm not really expecting much out of it. just if i really liked the program and my interview day i want to make sure i express that thoroughly. maybe someone might remember me more who knows. probably not
anyway i just wanted to make sure if i do it, i do it right.
like: is it preferable to send it to the program director only? or the interviewer as well? or only the interviewer? and is paper preferable or do people find it more annoying or does it just get lost in the vast pile of mail at the residency office?
i got some pretty good ideas searching the forums as you suggested but i'm still asking around.....

There was a thread about this.... Last year sometime....

Ahh yes, here it is.

Net result:
1. Writing (or not) a thank you note is almost never going to change your position on a ROL.
2. I personally think it's a waste of time, paper, and money. I do read them all. They all say the same thing.
3. My PA really likes seeing them.
4. Some people think it's the right thing to do, per etiquette.
