Tell me about it, soul sister.

But I have a date on friday and I don't think she is married so 😛
yeah...let's see if she remembers to keep her phone on her this time.

oh btw, i was referring specifically to hotties in my last post, not the girl you're going on a date with friday. 😱 oh damn! 😉

cjw, good point but Im not so sure these programs want charmers. I noticed that the programs I matched at I wore glasses, and the ones ranked above the one I matched at I wore contacts. I'm much better looking with contacts - I look a bit nerdy with glasses. I know this may sound silly, but perhaps the higher tier "academic" programs where I tried to impress them with good looks thought I am not a very serious person. I think they might prefer a less threatening/nerdy type of person. 😉

*Im probably just bitter I didnt get one of my top choices - I'm probably not very good looking.

It's a different girl. This one is much more emotionally stable. The one from last month and I decided this was not a good time for her to get involved and it wasn't fair to either of us, so thus, oh well. Rather mature of us, I think.

yes he is, I have a confidential memo from Ramzi Cotran shortly before his death that all ranked to match applicants must look like one of the cast member from the classic flick Revenge of the Nerds....Andy was classified as the "Harold Wormser" type. I of course was nicknamed Dudley "Booger" Dawson.

I don't think the charm comes from contact lenses! These are professors we're talking about for the most part - not LADoc00 😀 They want to be (professionally) proud of you when you leave as a graduate of their program.

I really didn't think I had my **** together when I interviewed at my #1. Maybe they forgave me because it was very early on in the season. I slept like 4 hours the night before, and it wasn't even because I was nervous - I hadn't decided they were top of my list at that point. Now that it's game set match I can even admit I nodded off during morning lecture.... *shhhhhh*

I told Chris Fletcher with a straight face that I was the world's expert on laser capture microdissection outside Lance Liotta's lab at the NIH. For a second he almost looked like he was gonna bust out laughing.

You prove my point, which is that charm is in the interactions.

If LADoc00 were my interviewer I wouldn't think twice about asking if he wanted me to strip down to my skivvies. 😛 With a very straight face of course!

Well, I know for a fact that I interview horribly, which may have led to me getting number 3 (although I am very happy about number three and the house I bought more than makes up for not getting number one) Also, it was pointed out to me by everyone I know that as a spoiled brat, it was more the pain of not getting what I wanted than anything else.

I also didn't go conservative (I wore a trendy-ish tweed suit) and my research experiences were mostly undergrad. I also got into path late in the game so I didn't have any fabulous letters of rec. Plus, and I think this was a HUGE factor, is that I am an anxious person socially, and will start picking up on people's body language and then start freaking out if I interpret it negatively. So it's not that I'm a horrible person, but I tend to come off as REALLY anxious when you initially meet me. Then after a while I grow on you, like a fungus.

I'm gonna assume that you didn't cuss like a sailor during your interviews 😀

Not that I recall, but I'm sure I probably let one or two slip out. I also have the tendency to nod a lot, which my husband says makes me look like a bobblehead doll 😀

I think I wore my glasses at most of my interviews too, although honestly I can't remember. I just assume so because over the past 2 years I have worn contacts about 20 days overall. It was hard to gauge interviewers - you can generally tell though right away if you pay attention how they want you to act. Some are simply serious people who wouldn't know a joke if it bit them in the ass, and others want to talk and have fun talking to you. I generally started off with a comment about something in their office that let me gauge their reaction, and went from there. Thus, a couple of interviews were completely serious and involved talking about my goals. But others were just bull****ting about baseball and Boston accents.

Glasses look just fine as long as they aren't honkey. Quit your whining.

I used to wear contacts but then the whole no sleep thing made that go all to ****. Now I realize that glasses are just a hell of alot more comfortable. And if you have nice looking ones they add character.

I find contacts more comfortable than glasses. Also I can see SO much better in my contacts. I wore my glasses the other day and I felt like I couldn't see anything all day. Easier at the scope, too, to not have to deal with glasses!

I am not whining. I like my glasses too. They used to make me tired when I wore them, because I associated putting my glasses on with getting ready for bed. But now it doesn't matter.

I used to think this too, until I got very small glasses and started getting very few hours of sleep. Wearing contacts is not very good when you want to sleep on the bus. I need to stop sleeping on the bus, though. I think it's messing up my sleep cycle. Maybe I should wear my contacts just to make myself stay awake. I had hard lenses. I remember not being able to tell that I had them in after I got used to them. But, I am no longer used to them. Now they hurt like a bitch.

No, this did not happen. Today I am back to glasses though and spent the last hour trying to figure out a complicated oral cavity resection. This one had teeth in it, and teeth are perhaps the hardest substance on earth.

Glasses are infinitely preferable in the presence of random squirty objects. Now if only they (the glasses, not the random squirty objects) would stop sliding down my nose.

True enough! That is often why I wear my glasses - because if I don't I will have to wear the plastic fake glasses which are often dirty and hard to clean anyway. Glasses are easier to clean.

We have these disposables:

I knew pathology was for me the first day I turned up and the attending oriented (orientated?) me to the gross room and said "...and over here are the eye shields. You get to pick any colour you want!" 😛

Those are the ones we have too - they have them in the morgue as well. I don't know if I have a death wish or I am just not phobic about such things but if it was up to me I wouldn't even wear a mask during autopsies if I wasn't forced to. Same with the eye shields.

On a different note, can you stuff something in your nose if you do like a decomposed body autopsy?

Well not that i m apprehensive about it, in any case it can't smell bad than my cooking.....

You can, although you do get used to it. And if you wear a mask the smell isn't actually that bad. Not many people actually stuff things in their nose - sometimes the cops who are there to observe or if by chance there are med students (Although usually they don't let med students see the decomp cases unless they are really interested).

How many of your autopsies are decomp cases? This is the only thing I dread about path residency, and hope that they don't come that often.

Sounds like you would rather be doing a decomp autopsy than doing blood bank for two months. 🙂

Hey quant!!! Thanks for asking! I'm doing pretty well - my thesis is almost done. That's why I was so postastic last night. 🙂

Good luck with your writing too!

Not very often - and unless you are doing forensics you don't really have to get too involved anyway. The ME will do them, we don't really have many responsibilities during ME cases.

Have you ever had formalin splashed in your eyes?

You are disgusting 😛

They have them in the surgical suites too. I put them on today for a bowel-anastamosis-fell-apart case. I really had no wish to be squirted with oily foul-smelling black goo.

I usually forget the shields though.

But they're so well preserved now! Archeologists will marvel at your eyes when they dig you up hundreds of years from now.

I was reminded inexplicably of this:

Lorelai: Michel, the phone.
Michel: Mm-hmm. It rings.
Lorelai: Can you answer it?
Michel: No. People are particularly stupid today. I can't talk to any more of them.

Folks, take it from somebody who has done A LOT of autopsies: Protection is a Good Thing - also when doing autopsies.
´
I have always worn double surgical gloves + face mask with eye shield. People can die from a lot of nasty stuff, including contagious stuff. While AIDS isn't a major problem you'd have to be careful. Also, TB is a real concern. A few cases - CJD comes to mind - requires the full spacesuit isolation protocol thing.

Also, remember that the hallmark of a good pathologist is that there's NO blood on your scrubs afterwards (even when you've shown off your Samurai knifeing skillz by exclusively using the Really Big Knife rather than those tiny scalpels).

Is that what your avatar is doing? 😀

I gots ta agree though. Timely advice.

Attitudes towards what is safe certainly varies. I mean, whoever said it was safe to lick your finger to turn the pages of a hospital chart!? :barf:
