It seems like there's much less angst and drinking being discussed during our post-ROL pre-match period, as opposed to last year. What's up with that? Personally, I'm working on building up my tolerance for the Match Day-St. Paddy's 48 hour extravaganza.

Don't worry Aubrey. There is much angst over here and I have been putting my liver into overdrive. My drink of choice:

sorry guys I tried to edit those multiple posts out but sdn is not cooperating...

I, too, have much angst. Luckily, my 22oz friend is now available here.

Okay, now I have even more angst. I was trying to attach a beautiful picture of a bottle of Fat Tire beer. It didn't seem to work. Maybe it's a sign I should go drink some Fat Tire rather than think about the fact that I no longer have any control over where I will be this summer.

Makers Mark is some goooooood ****! 👍

Word. A fantastic value to boot. 👍

What's going on with SDN??? On the main page its not registering new posts but when I click on individual thread, I do see new responses. Clearly, I am spending way too much time here...

I just wish it was March 13th already. All this anxiety is making me nauseous :barf: I am having all these seconds thoughts about things I should have done differently.

It's all good.

*pours miko another drink*

Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention
I did, what I had to do, and saw it through, without exemption.
I planned, each charted course, each careful step, along the byway,
and more, much more than this,
I did it my way!

(apologies to Frank)

It doesn't help that all the other parents at the daycare, in an area heavily populated by medical professionals, ask me every day how long til match, then laugh when I can tell them exactly how many days. It might be a good thing that I'm on a one-student-at-a-time rotation, that way I'm not with other fourth years just talking about match 24/7 (though I come here, of course).

I will be lucky if my sub-I actually lets me GO to the match. I'll probably have to take an extra night of call or something. 😡

Match day here is a med school sanctioned holiday, so everyone attends the match-day ceremony (it's actually required). Following the ceremony there is a BBQ with various sporting events, a reception with alumni, and then the class has rented out a bar until 2am. Of course, Friday is not a holiday, so that's gonna be some painful prerounding that morning.

Indeed. If I counted the number of Maker's handles I've bought from Costco over the past few years... 😱

Screw that. If they don't let you go I say you call in sick. It's total BS for them to keep you from going to match day. 😡

There were a couple of toolbags who let their students off for only the hour of match day but 1) made them come back immediately afterwards and 2) made them come back the next day. I was on heme-onc and the fellow told me to have fun for the next two days.

Beary, that is just wrong 😡 !!!! They have to let you go and at minimum you should be getting a 4 day weekend (in my opinion).

I won't be going to the match at my school since I am on the opposite coast right now and it would just cost too much money to fly me, my husband and the doggie there for a just a few days. Apparently the dean calls us on Thursday with results if we are not at the match (assuming that I do match that is). I will however go to the graduation in May 🙂 .

Although... A martini would go nicely w/ my new outfit.

If you can post on this forum during this period of time, you're not doing your job. Remember that.

Oh yes, see you in April. Bitches.

Can someone clear something up for me: On Monday do matched/unmatched applicants get an email or is the information posted on the NRMP website? I thought we got emails but on the NRMP website it says:

"Applicant matched and unmatched information posted to the Web site at 12:00 noon eastern time."

We have a class meeting at that time where it is my understanding that we get envelopes saying if we matched or not.

My school told us that we won't receive emails and to check the website.

Thanks. If that's indeed the case the NRMP servers are gonna get a serious workout at 11:59 AM.

My school doesn't do this...I'm glad too, because if I don't match I don't need to find out at at class meeting. 😳

The envelope you get on match day should say where you matched. The matched/unmatched info comes out on Monday before match day, and then if unmatched, Tuesday is the scramble. Yeah, logging into NRMP website next monday should be fun.

I don't know for sure but I think the matched/unmatched info is on both the NRMP website and the e-mail you get next Monday. I did hear that some people got the e-mail way later than 12 EST that it was supposed to come. I am going to e-mail my school and find out before next Monday.

So Match Day is 9 days away. Assuming I can get out of being on-call that day from my sub-I, I am looking forward to it. So here are some topics to tide us over until then...

1. After the match, how long is reasonable to wait before traveling to a new city to look for living arrangements? Do you need a contract in hand to get pre-approved for a loan? How long before the "summer resident turnover" takes place in the housing market with departing residents looking to unload their places and thus creating a buyers market?

2. Will we know who else matched at the same program we did (e.g. when programs contact us will they give a list of other matchees... just curious)?

3. Does anyone else feel like me, in that if they don't match at one of their top 2 they are more and more likely to keep falling down their list? Like most of us (I assume), I gave less feedback to programs lower on my list, so it seems likely that "the further you fall down your list, the further you fall down your list"... does that make any sense? It's like a vicious cycle or something like that. I guess I am getting paranoid that it is all or nothing, which probably isn't true but I think the waiting may be getting to me.

Assuming I match, I'm gonna make a trip to the new city in mid-May after graduation and start looking for living arrangements. I'd like to move in early June to have some time to explore before residency starts. Before then I'll be checking things out on the internet I suppose...I think May is a good month to go because college kids get done then as well.

I'm not sure about getting pre-approved for loans but I would assume that you'd need some evidence of pending employment...If I end up somewhere where buying may be an option I will have to look into this. I've heard that some lenders/banks offer special deals (interest rates?) to resident physicians - can anyone back this up? It would be great to finally be able to have a place of my own as I've been renting through college and med school.

I feel exactly the same was about dropping down on my match list. I didn't correspond with any programs besides my top three so I feel like if I fall through those I could end up anywhere, or indeed NOWHERE. This is probably just me being pessimistic, but until I have a "you have matched" confirmation on monday I'll be worrying like crazy...

Good topics. I'm thinking I'll probably go there in late April or early May. I unfortunately do not graduate until June. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to rent because I'm just not going to be able to put in the time to do a proper search for buying. I guess I want to live wherever I'm at for a little while to get to know the town and then buy.

I have to say that I too have had the feelings of fear about not contacting programs further down on my list. I guess I hope that they don't take that sort of thing into their rank list as I received some positive feedback from my programs that I ranked 4-8. For the most part I feel that I am ranking enough places that I should be fine, but until Monday comes, the paranoid part of me will of course be nervous.

Yes, there are special "doctor loans" for buying homes. I am already pre-approved for up to $150K and am currently single with no income. I'm sure you have to show them proof after you match, but you can get pre-approved and get the process started before then. I am using Bank of America's doctor loan program, but I'm sure there are plenty of others out there. I have gotten stuff in the mail from PhysiciansReloServices.com but don't know much about them.

i looked into this somewhat before buying a home. the 2 major institutions that definitely offer this kind of thing are bank of america and us bank. you may have one, both, or neither in the state you are going, and they only will give you a loan if they have a local branch. there are also many smaller, often internet-based companies but these were not as good a deal when i was looking. (physicianloans.com is one but their deal wasn't nearly as good as the other banks above). hope this helps, and good luck in the match.

They may or may not tell you - but you can always ask the program coordinator to send you the other first years that matched with you.
