Hi All,

Just curious....were any of you guys surprised by your step 1 score (good or bad)? I'm still waiting for my score to come out, but all I know is that I felt TERRIBLE after the exam. I've talked to several other people, and they have all said the same thing. How is it possible to feel terrible after an exam and still score above a 230? Is that just post-exam jitters?

Just about every single med student feels this way.

My n=1 words of encouragement: Five days before my exam I scored 228 on NBME 19. On exam day I walked out feeling like my life was over because there was no chance I passed. Of the questions I remembered, I identified 25 that I definitely missed; my estimated percent correct equated to a barely passing score according to old charts floating around.

Well, everyone else taking my exam must have felt the same way, because I was floored when I opened my score report to find a 259 staring me in the face -- higher than any of my practice tests.

Moral of the story is you truly never know. There are some ****ing hard versions of that test floating around with very forgiving scales to compensate. Just trust your NBME scores, and enjoy your break.

I've been following the Official Step 1 Thread since it began and I can tell you there are countless people who feel terrible and then score 230, 240, 250, and, I kid you not, 260+.

I think they do a pretty good job curving Step 1 to account for different difficulties. Very few people are shocked by their score on the low end. Most people end up where they deserve based on effort, grades, and practice exams.

I have a hunch that it's actually a very fair exam, but you'll have to ask me again in another 2 months...

Yup. Felt like total crap actually. Thought i blew it. Counted 10+ mistakes 5 of which were so dumb i wouldve never made them if not under pressure. Ended up shocked with a very good score that was right in line with nbmes.

Congrats on the score. I had a similar situation with NBMEs in general. Now that you posted your score though, you've bought yourself 100s of unsolicited SDN PMs asking you how you studied, strategies, keys to doing well, etc.
