I am a bio major too...

Here is what I took first semester.

English- 3 credits
Gen Chem 1 w/ lab- 4 credits
Calculus 1- 4 credits
Bio 1 w/lab- 4 credits
Research Analysis- 2 credits (class we have to take for our honors program)

Bio was the hardest of all and chem right behind that. But cal was easy for me since I had a pretty strong cal background. English was okay and research analysis was a piece of cake.

I say atleast take one science class and start getting your pre-reqs down asap. My classes were a little challenging, but hey its college and on the top of that you are pre-med.

Hope this helps🙂

I agree with taking your pre-reqs earlier in your college education if you plan on going via the traditional route of applying to Med School (applying after Junior year).

If possible, I've seen posts here that state that taking the MCAT after your sophomore year is good idea, because if you don't do as well as you would like the first time, you can still re-take it in your Junior year. But, some people take it at the end of their Junior Year also.

Ideally, for MCAT after sophomore year I would divide the pre-reqs up as follows:
Freshman Year: Bio I&II and Chem I&II + Gen eds
Sophomore Year: Orgo I & II, Physics I & II + Gen eds.
This set up allows you to take the MCAT with all your pre-reqs completed as far as the sciences go, after your sophomore year.

For taking it after junior Year, Instead of taking Physics with Orgo, you can only take one of the courses, and then take the other your Junior Year.

This is all hypothetical, and just gives you an idea of what to expect.

Also, my advice is to not do ALL your Gen ed. reqs early, but instead mix and match sciences/major courses w/ gen eds. so your schedule won't be that hectic and miserable. 🙂

Oh and regarding your question my first year included the following courses:

Freshman Year I:
English I
Spanish I
Sociology
Statistics

Year II:
Chem I
Spanish II
English II
Philosophy

Its obvious I didn't follow my own advice, but this was before I came to my senses and found Student Doctor. The schedule I listed above is what I wish I would have done, so I wouldn't be in my current predicament. 😛

Is that a Southern thing? I have only ever heard "calc" as an appropriate abbreviation for calculus.
