Hi. I'm a fourth year student at University of Virginia. I'm graduating this year with a degree in psychology, but I was not able to finish my premed requirements because of a number of reasons. Firstly, being the first in my family to go to college, I did not have much guidance about how to take classes (I had to figure everything out on my own). Secondly, it took me a little while to figure out my major of interest, and lastly, I dealt with many health-related problems during my first three semesters and they put me a little behind schedule. So, now, I still have to take Physics and Orgo labs to complete my premed requirements. The situation is a little complicated though because not only do I have to take these two courses, I also have to do a postbac program to enhance my GPA (my health problems impacted my academic performance during the beginning of my college career). My postbac of interest is offered at EVMS, but one of its requirements is having finished all the prereqs and not having a grade lower than C (I received a C- in general chemistry).

Given that I want to minimize the cost of taking these courses, can I finish the premed requirements at a community college and then do a year of postbac at EVMS?

It is possible that you could do this, but since you've already determined that you do not fit the requirements, I would not apply without finishing up your requirements and/or e-mailing or calling the program to see if you are still eligible given your C-. Since each program is completely independent, the only ones who can really answer your question is the EVMS post-bacc!

they should take the C- because alot of schools don't do the +/- system

Good point. I'll check with them.

I am sure you're fine with the C-, email/call them beforehand they'll make an exception.

What about taking Physics and Orgo lab in community college though? I always hear that taking prereqs in community college is not recommended. Is that true?

Yes it's not recommended.

Eh, I feel like if you completed the rest of your pre-reqs at your 4-year university and you're about to graduate, you're fine. Just be able to explain it if asked. I think that a perfectly acceptable explanation is that courses at the 4-year university level are inexplicably expensive, and it was a financial decision to take the courses at CC (couldn't afford otherwise).

If you really did poorly in your pre-reqs at UVA though, you might want to take those pre-reqs at UVA (or another 4-year institution) since it might look like a cop out move.

Here are the grades I received in my pre-reqs at UVA. The Cs and B- in bio lab come from the time I was struggling with health issues. (Gen Chem: C-,C+), (Chem Lab: A-,A), (Bio: C+,B+) , (Bio Lab: B-, A), (Orgo: B+,B+), (Physics: B,B), (Biochem: B)
Would you say I have a chance at saving some money by taking courses at CC?
