Hi!

I guess I am considered an non-traditional applicant to medical school since I have been working for three years as a medicinal chemist after I graduated from college, with no intention to apply to med school during my undergrad years. It occurs to me recently that I want to pursue a career in the medical field. I am studying for the August MCAT and hoping to do well since I tooked those classes 7, 8 years ago. I will also start some meaningful volunteer work after MCAT to gain more insight into the field.

I have no volunteer nor clinical experience. My grades from UCLA were mediocre. (overall GPA 3.44, major 3.16 in Chemistry) I have many B's and C's in the hardcore science classes in my sophmore and junior years. I showed an upward trend in grades in my last year of college in more advanced science though.

I am thinking about applying next June to med schools. However, I am thinking that maybe going through the post-bac program (special master, or general) will prepare me better by improving my academic credential.

My question is do you think that I should go directly to the post-bac program, or should I try to apply to med school next year? For those of you who went through the post-bac program, is it worth the time and the money?

Thank you for your help.

Lilith, do a search (upper right hand corner) for "post-bacc" or some variation of those words on SDN. You'll find a TON of info. Good luck.

Thank you TexasGuy! I will go ahead to do that.

🙂

I know that if you are looking to do a formal post-bacc for the upcoming year, most of the deadlines are over. If you want to take classes on your own at a college of your choice during the fall and spring semester, you still have time to do that.

Yeah but some of those postbacs take anyone with decent stats...ie VCU certificate program. Check this program out Lilith. The good thing about it is that if you dont get into med school in your 1st year you can get a masters degree.
