Hi there,

Question for all:

I am in the UCLA Re-Application/Postbacc Program and am in the process of planning my next two years during the app process (re-applying next June). What are your thoughts on taking heavy science coursework to improve a science GPA versus pursuing a Master's? My original con to Master's was that GPA is separated from undergrad GPA. Any thoughts?

My stats are as follows:

Science GPA (UCLA undergrad) was 2.8, Overall GPA: 3.1, Non-Sci ~ 3.45
MCAT:27Q (8V, 9, PS, 10Bio, Q) in 4/03, Planning to retake in April
Significant Clinical and EC Experience
Undergrad Major: Physiological Science

I would appreciate any input either through the board or through e mail at [email protected]. Thanks!!!

Hi Kathy,

I am a UCLA alumni as well. I was once in a position very very close to yours...similar GPA and same MCAT. What I did was work full time at a lab in UCLA as a SRA II while taking night classes through UCLA ext. This allowed me to bring my science GPA above 3.0. I also retook the MCAT and got a 33Q. Now I am reapplying to medical schools while attending the Georgetown Special Master's Program. I think that you should follow a similar approach. Get a job that is related to medicine, take night courses (probably science courses since your BCPM GPA is low), retake the MCAT, then apply to a formal master's program that helps you get into medical school. By taking classes as a post-bac it will reflect on your undergrad GPA. I honestly believe that having below a 3.0 in any GPA category will hurt you heavily. So take enough classes where you can raise your science above 3.0. Also try to get above a 30 on the MCAT. That seems to be the magic number. To be honest, you have a rough road ahead, but if you're dedicated, you can do it! I still have a long road too! Good luck and let me know if I can be of more help!
