Two Academic Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Positions (2020-2022)
Position: The Brain Rehabilitation Research Center (BRRC) and the Center for OCD and Anxiety Related Disorders (COARD) at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center and University of Florida are seeking applicants for two post-doctoral fellow positions (adult specialty; 18 and older) in Neuropsychology. Both positions are for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal. The aim is to train academic-track neuropsychologists through strong research training and opportunities while also meeting Houston conference guidelines and requirements for board certification with ABPP/ABCN. Appropriate candidates will have obtained a doctoral degree (PhD) from an APA or CPA-approved graduate program in Clinical Psychology, as well as an APA or CPA-approved internship meeting Division 40 requirements. This program does not participate in the APPCN-sponsored computerized match. Two Academic Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Positions (2020-2022)
Training Settings: Training will be accomplished via consortium with the UF Health Center and the Malcom Randall VAMC. The UF Health Center is the largest and most comprehensive academic health center in the Southeast and encompasses six colleges, a statewide network of affiliated hospitals and clinics, and the neighboring North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System including the Malcom Randall VAMC.
The Brain Rehabilitation Research Center (About Us - RR&D Brain Rehabilitation Research Center (BRRC) ) is a VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Service (RR&D) funded Center of Excellence that has been active for 20 years investigating mechanisms and symptoms of neurological injury with the goal of developing more effective neurorehabilitation techniques. The BRRC is dedicated to leverage principles of neuroplasticity to improve brain and behavioral function. The BRRC is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians including from bioengineering, communication sciences, computer programming, health psychology, kinesiology, medicine, neurology, neuroscience, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physiology, psychology, rehabilitation science, and speech pathology. There are a number of funded efforts via the VA, DOD, DARPA, and NIH. The postdoctoral associates will be working on mechanisms of traumatic brain injury, cognitive and emotional symptoms (e.g., PTSD), and interventions to address core problems such as sleep disruption. Methodologies include structural, functional, and spectroscopic magnetic resonance imaging, electrophysiology, and neurostimulation technologies (e.g., transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation).
Post-doctoral associates will have an affiliate appointment with the Center for OCD and Anxiety Related Disorders (COARD), a McKnight Brain Institute housed research unit within the Department of Psychiatry at UF. The Clinical and Health Psychology’s Neuropsychology Service is housed in a free-standing clinic (The Clinical and Health Psychology Clinic) that has close programmatic interactions with the UF Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Trauma and other medical/surgical departments as part of the UF Health comprehensive care programs (UF Health, University of Florida Health). Clinical supervising faculty include: Russell M. Bauer, Ph.D., ABPP/CN, Dawn Bowers, PhD., ABPP/CN, Duane Dede, Ph.D., Kristen Hamlet, Ph.D., Catherine Price, Ph.D., ABPP/CN, Shellie-Anne Levy, Ph.D., Glenn Smith, PhD., ABPP/CN, and John B. Williamson, Ph.D.
Research Requirements: This fellowship opportunity will foster the development of well-trained clinical scientists. Research activities will include designing and implementing experiments, evaluating research participants (assessing TBI and PTSD), developing and implementing research protocols, analyzing data, and producing manuscripts. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected develop mentored research proposals for VA CDA (K equivalent) or NIH K mechanisms. The BRRC and UF have extensive support resources to assist our postdoctoral trainees in the development of grant proposals.
Fellows will have the opportunity to learn how to process various MRI sequences, and will be trained in polysomnography and the use of neurostimulation technologies.
Educational Requirements: Postdoctoral fellows will participate in weekly didactics available through the neuropsychology. Postdoctoral fellows will also be expected to attend and contribute to research and clinical presentations organized by the Center for OCD and Anxiety Related Disorders. The BRRC offers a biweekly investigator meeting designed to foster the development of new collaborative projects and fellows may present and also attend these meetings. Additional educational opportunities will be available to fellows including research and clinical presentations through the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering as well as via the One Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the McKnight Brain Institute. Training opportunities in computational and statistical methods are also available both within the lab and through the University and affiliated organizations, e.g. the UF Carpentries Club (UF Carpentries Club).
Clinical Service Requirements: Clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellows will dedicate time to direct clinical service activity in one or more of the following areas: assessment, intervention, consultation and inter-professional collaborations. Supervision of junior trainees and colleagues is also a critical part of clinical service requirements. Clinical service will include evaluation of patients with suspected TBI and PTSD as well as one day a week of direct service delivery in a variety of neuropsychology clinics that provide care to patients with a range of adult neurological/psychiatric problems. Many of the rotations include participation in interdisciplinary outpatient or inpatient clinical settings allowing for advanced training in the delivery of brief target assessments, interventions and/or consultations and inter-professional collaboration with colleagues from numerous disciplines.
Stipend and Benefits: Competitive (includes VA and UF sources). Postdoctoral fellows are eligible for comprehensive health benefits through the VA and will have access to libraries and other research resources available for faculty and postdoctoral fellows at UF and the VA.
Start Date: The start date is flexible; we understand that internships end at different times and we will try to accommodate.
