Yes. I'd also like to know who else on SDN has experience with this.
:eyebrow:

Seriously, it depends on the state you're in. I know the AMCAS primary asks about arrests, but specifically tells you not to include arrests if they are misdemeanor herb arrests in CA or another state or two. Go check out the AMCAS primary instructions for further info.

If you do happen to get one of these and let it go as a misdemeanor on your record you kind of deserve your chances being hurt...
For this, and in the case of an MIP (minor in possession of alcohol) you best damn show up to your court date and get it moved to an infraction. It is very easy to do and nearly every judge will let you do it, mind you it entails a lot more community service. But if that's the case just put the x hours of community service as an extra curricular on ur AMCAS.
Win, Win.

Damn, I think I would rather have the misdemeanor than the heart attack.

Are you charged as a dealer or a user? I think it makes a difference. If you were dealing pot to make money, that is not good. If you had some weed and smoked it, well, who didn't between the ages of 18 and 22. Big deal.

Hopefully, you can get this charge expunged. If so, then you will not have to report it to the majority of schools. If you are from CA, then even better.

Not necessarily, but remember that admissions committees are also getting applications from thousands of other students without a criminal history

Most of whom smoked weed on many occasions. We need to change the weed laws.

Were you convicted or did you plea bargain? Most schools ask for convictions of misdemeanor or felony. I would say that if it doesn't ask for arrests, and that's all you were left with, you wouldn't need to mention it. If they don't ask for it don't tell them. How can they say you were dishonest if they ask for a felony conviction and all you've ever had were dropped charges for example?

You done effed up.

I hope it was worth it dude.

Just kidding it definitely wasn't.

I hope it works out for you OP. The best case would what everyone else said, where its an infraction (haha, not an MI), and you don't have to even report it. Even if that doesn't work out, I don't think it'd close the door to becoming a doctor. Everybody makes mistakes or gets caught doing silly things sometimes, and hopefully adcoms would understand that.

I've got a brilliant plan for you...
Adcoms are always looking for people who have overcome great challenges right? In this case you did it to yourself for doing something stupid considering what direction you want your life to go. Your best option is to turn this into a positive. Turn it into an ah ha moment. Consider doing some sort of community service that revolves around pot. No don't grow it. I'm talking about Marijuana Anonymous or some other kind of rehabilitation program. Then when you write your application you can say that getting in trouble really opened your eyes and now you want to help people like yourself. By doing this you will effectively turn something that was hurting you into something that makes you stick out in a positive way.

Aren't you glad I didn't just troll?

I didn't realize you could be arrested for such things, I always thought it was more like a citation, but what do I know!?

It will hurt your chances a bit, but if you are early on in your college career, it will have less of an impact if it were say junior or senior year.

Totally agree with the above. I had two MIPs (minor in possession of alcohol), so I organized a mini promotional campaign on campus in conjunction with mothers against drunk driving. So in the box on AMCAS where you have to fess up and explain yourself, I also got to show "how I learned form my mistakes" and some leadership. 4 years later I am finishing up at a top 10 med school, and my life was far from ruined by those mistakes.

The one area that pot could really screw you is with federal loans. There is a box you have to check on FASFA if you have been caught with illegal substances. Not sure what the fed will do if you check this box, but it would suck not to have federal loans with their awesome interest rates.

Don't quote me on this as I am not really sure, but I believe that any drug charges, indicated by checking that box, automatically disqualify you from financial federal aid. I think you'd only be eligible for private loans from there on out - which would still require you to fill out the FAFSA however.

Keep in mind that Plus loans are federal loans, so if they do infact disqualify you from all federal aid you might have trouble paying for med school, unless you have access to money from other sources or don't mind going the military route. So I would definitely check this out ASAP so that you can begin to plan for it if need be.

Get your record expunged so you can say "no" to everything and be legally entitled. By the time you apply to med school, if your incident happened early on in your college career, there should have been enough time passed so that you qualify. [Qualifying in CA = your probation period has to be over, completed terms of probation, no new pending cases, non-felony, no county jail time over a year]
