Hey everyone,

I got an interview to Temple KSOD recently, and it's scheduled for mid-February. I'm super excited, but I'm currently failing calculus 2 (which sucks). I haven't taken calculus 1 since sophomore year (I am a senior currently) and I think that it's a big reason why I'm struggling so much. Part of it is also my fault because I'm taking a pretty heavy course load and have been prioritizing other classes, but am prepared to put forth the work to avoid failing. Does anyone know Temple's policy or general dental school policy on matriculation?

I hope this doesn't happen, but, if I had to drop the class - it means I would not be able to graduate this semester and I would have to retake it during Summer session I (mid-May to late-June), and then graduate in the Summer instead. I checked with my friend who got accepted to Temple and in their email it says that they would like to have transcripts of their students in by July 31st.

So if I were to end up getting accepted to Temple and not graduate until the beginning of the Summer, do you guys think this would be okay or would the offer of admissions be rescinded since I did not graduate when I stated I would on the application (May 2017) and would instead be graduating in June 2017? I'm hoping that it would be alright (not ideal, but alright) since I would still have my degree before matriculating to dental school. I'm hoping that if I told Brian Hahn about my situation then he would at least consider it. What do you guys think? I'm so fortunate to get an interview invite, but because of this situation, it makes me feel like my hopes and dream are slowly slipping away with every calculus quiz...

TL;DR - I might drop a non-prerequisite course, and if I do I would retake the course in the first summer session, but it would delay my graduation from May 2017 to June 2017 instead. If I get accepted into dental school, would this be okay as long as I do well in the course when I retake it?

Any advice or help would be really appreciated!

Calling Temple themselves is the move to make here.

I thought about that, but the reason why I would be worried about doing that is because since I haven't had the interview yet, I feel like it would give them a to pick another applicant over myself. I don't know, do you think I'm reading into it too much?

Oh I thought you had the acceptance already. Well if you are about to fail that course you can't hide it from them. I thought the academic update phase of the application cycle was already in the works. If they for any reason feel that you tried to hide it from them, that is much worst than you letting them know.

Well I'm not failing yet, so I'm not hiding anything - plus it's a class I'm currently enrolled in now. So I was just wondering what were to happen and I drop the course, then I wouldn't graduate yet. Of course I plan to tell them that if I were to be accepted, but I don't want them to worry yet, do you know what I mean?

Can you drop and change your major? I don't know. I honestly don't think this will be a problem. First wait and see if you get accepted. Second, all they care about is that you graduate and earned the degree. That's just my opinion from what I have gathered. I did read a thread that someone had their acceptance revoked because they went from a 3.2 GPA down to a 3.0 GPA. Didn't make much sense to me, but it was an old post and I doubt the person checks SDN anymore to answer questions.

I can't really change my major since it's my last semester, but I'm hoping it will be okay because if I do get an acceptance, I'll have the degree before I start dental school in the Fall, my graduation date would just be moved back one month. My GPA won't drop either because I'm doing great in all my other classes. Can someone else provide some insight on this? I've been really worried about this issue. Getting the interview was some of the best news I got in a while but I'm worried that this opportunity is slipping away. 🙁

Should Temple grant you an acceptance there's a very strong likelihood that they will rescind the offer upon receiving your final grade for that course. Even in your last semester you need to at the least pass every class. If you explain your situation (preferably after getting an acceptance so they don't outright reject you before making a decision) and perhaps explain that you plan to retake the course in the summer (at whatever college) and nail it, then they may make the acceptance provisional provided that you actually do incredibly well in the course before matriculating. That's an extreme stretch but that's the only cinderella story scenario I can think of for your case. Just curious but what made you take Calc 2? Most dental programs don't even require that...

I need it for my major - biology, haha. Yeah, exactly how you put it, I don't want Temple to outright reject me before making a decision because it would be a dropped course. All my other grades will be A or A-, so I don't think it'll look like I'm slacking this semester (I hope). I'll definitely plan to take the course again at a branch campus or even a Summer session here. I don't know what to expect because part of me thinks that if I'm honest and say that I plan on retaking it and passing before I start in the Fall it would be okay, but another part of me is also just super anxious.

I say take a breather for now and just make it through the interview. As far as they know you're on track to finish everything and probably won't even bring it up during the interview (you can double check that by asking others that already interviewed). After that then you can twiddle your thumbs and wait for their decision. If they reject you, at least you'll know it wasn't based on your calc mishap and you can replan from there. If they accept you then you can try to see if they will work with you. Either way you WILL end up in dental school at some point. If not this time, then just make it your mission next time to DEFINITELY succeed.

Okay, I think that's a solid plan. I want to ace the interview and hope that the admissions team is understanding about the situation and will give me a chance. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

Does anyone else have any thoughts?
