My school has the university/hospital name and logo on the right side of our coats and gives us the option of having our own names on the left. I have been wearing mine without my name embroidered and it's starting to annoy me that it's remarkably unidentifiable.

Is it absolutely ridiculous to have my initials monogrammed in script on the left side? I'm a lover of all things pretty and girly and think it would be cute, but I haven't seen anyone else do it and am not sure if it would be considered unprofessional.

Thoughts?

I would get my face printed on the back of the coat but that is just me. I think if messing with the coat isn't against the rules then go nuts.

I'm not sure what you think is unprofessional. Is it the font you are considering, is it just using your initials, or is it having your name on the coat?

My lab coats are all monogrammed with my full name and degree as they were during my residency and fellowship. It's not considered unprofessional.

If they pay for it, I agree, go to town. Otherwise know that your medical school whitecoats can get awfully disgusting after a while.

As long as said font is legible and doesn't clash with the rest of the coat, professionalism shouldn't be an issue. It's been done before:

Perhaps the reason it's unclear why I'm questioning the professionalism is that there's some confusion as to what constitutes monogramming vs the broader term of embroidery. This is along the lines of what I want:

It would be the same color as my school logo. (Also, to be clear, those are not my initials!)

I mean, IIIII wouldn't want that on my coat -- but I'm a guy!

If you want it, I say go for it unless your school says otherwise. (Maybe go ask them what they think?)

Ok, don't put your initials on it. Put your first and last name on it. It isn't for decoration, it is for identification. Putting your initials on it would be too much if you ask me.

Ok, that looks unprofessional to me or at least clearly outside the standard for a physician to be.

If you wish to be able to identify your coat and just put your name on the inside tag like your mother used to do when you went to summer camp.

Definitely not.

I didn't think it was possible for it to be unprofessional to do this (everyone at my school has a chance to do it through the school) but apparently you've managed to figure out a way. That script is absurd and it should be your full name not initials. This isn't dress up glitter time.

You definitely should get your name on it in normal legible script.

Our names were already on them when we got them. One side has school name/logo and the other side has first and last name with optional middle initial.

Second-- it's not a bath towel.

Lol👍

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the thread title. I thought there was no way it could be unprofessional. Well, looks like OP proved us wrong. It is somehow possible to unprofessionally put a name on a white coat, rofl.

Same. Our names are in normal, Arial-esque font. I would keep things pretty conservative if you decide to get something out on your coat.

Yeah definitely do it. Your patients and attendings will love it! It will help everybody identify you....as somebody with zero common sense and probably doesn't have the maturity to be anywhere near an MD.

Sounds like she'd make for a GREAT ER VOLUNTEER then!

(Time to go back and be a pre-med again.)

This would be a very weird thing to do. This is not a fashion statement clothing item....either do your full name, degree, and possibly department, or nothing.

Don't do it. I'm not a fan of names on students' coats, but that may just be me. About 25% of people have a name on their coat here. If everybody at your school has it, go for it. If nobody does it will look strange. The design above will look weird no matter what.

When I opened this I was really hoping the question was going to be:

Is "Insert First and Last name here, MD Candidate" okay to embroider on my coat?

I was let down.

Very weird. It'll stand out--some folks like that little dab of detail--but, if you're going to go for the: "Hey look at me, I'm an individual," go for a skull and crossbones. Trust me, they'll remember you.

If/when your school gives you a form to put your name down "as you want it to be on your coat," you really should out down "Dr. Ender W, MD (candidate)" and see whether anyone catches it BEFORE it goes to the embroiderer....

Absolutely do not get that monogram put on there - it looks like some terrible mix of 8 year old little girl with an annoying attempt to be "classy." I also don't think I've ever seen a coat with a monogram on the front. That just seems goofy as it doesn't even identify who you are. If you're going to put anything, just put your name. I wouldn't include any kind of title.

Gonna have to agree w/ everyone else, It just looks too unprofessional.

Haha 👍

This. Your initials should be hidden on an inside tag. If you want to put your name on the coat you basically have 2 options:

Kim Kardashian

or

K. Kardashian

🙄

The alternative if you just want to be able to identify your coat is to bestoon it with pins. Medical societies, ribbons for your favorite causes, whatever.

I'm going to predict her next question will be whether the following 6" diameter pin would be "too unprofessional" for her white coat:

Ok, I'll be the only one here to say it: OP, if you want and like that logo, go get it and rock that **** with confidence.

You should have known what kind of response you would get from people here...I think there was a "should I get a tattoo" thread a little while ago that got similar negative responses. To be fair, no, I wouldn't wear anything that looked quite like what you have because I'm a guy, but anything you want to do to make yourself stand out as an individual is gonna be the type of thing that most people wouldn't do.
