Hey guys,

I'm on leave of abscence for a year and would like to set up at home to practice drilling my preps on my typodont. can anyone tell me how to set up a drill for at home practice? (ie. do i need a generator?)

Thanks!

More like an air compressor

I guess you could use a generator...if you plan to practice while camping in a tent or just don't pay your electric bill, it's plausible!

Your cheapest and easiest option is to get a portable unit used for missionary/veterinary dentistry. The cost will likely be ~$2500-8000 depending on features and new vs. used. Good Luck.

Ok, enough being a smartass. You can run one on an air compressor. Most run at 40psi, just check the recommendations for the unit you are using. I imagine you can lease or buy a used unit...or you could just go into school to practice.

I heard that if you take leave of absence, they make you redo all pre-clinical finals again, is that true?

Snapon tools?

no you just have to redo your entire 2nd year!!!!!

Go to walmart and but the smallest air compressor they have. I think its like $40-$60. Then go to Home Depot in the paint section and buy a pressure regulator for $12 bucks. The pressure regulator will have a gauge on it that will tell you the pressure after regulation, you can set it to 40 PSI or whatever is recommended for your hand piece.

hey everybody, thanks for all the advice. i decided to go with the dremel as it was the least expensive option and a very good idea.

as for obsessive compulsive...maybe, i am, but i'd rather go back and have an easy 2nd year than a hard one since i have to do it all again! i would hate to lose my hand skills that i have developed thus far.

Use a compressor like everyone else said. But then contact a used dental parts dealer to buy a foot rheostat (regulator? whatever the foot thingie is). You can also buy a box to add fiber optic light to your handpiece that is activated by the rheostat. I think that's about $100. Leave the garage door open when you drill or the place will stink.

If you have an air compressor at home how are you going to connect the handpeice to it? how will you get the connector that attaches coupler to the air hose? how will you connect the rheostat?

Dremmel FTW. can you find a chuck for the dremmel that will allow you to use you burs?

LOL... That's ok... people with OCD know that the behavior you are talking about isn't anything like OCD 😉 Now if you start drilling each ivorine tooth using exactly 3 strokes for fear that if you don't (and instead complete it in less than 3 or more than 3 strokes), you will flunk out of dental school, then we can talk about obsessive compulsive. Oh how miserable that is even if it isn't dental related 🙂

I had a lab in my basement, because i got really lazy my first and second year.

When buying a compressor its not the PSI, its the SCFM (Standard Cubic Feet per Minute) you will want a compressor that has at least a 2.5 SCFM.

Silent compressors are the way to go, unless you have a garage, and if you get a cheapo from homedepot, get a big tank so that the compressor does not keep kicking on and off, otherwise you'll go crazy from the noise.

You'll probably want a moisture trap on you silent compressor, but its not a must. You just then hook everything up (Basically, line from Compressor to Rheostat, rheostat to handpiece or hand piece control switch.)

Rheostat and hosing can be found cheap on EBay or dental surplus stores, but its all a matter of what you find at the time. You can even buy them from dental companies for around $100-150

I wouldn't waste my time with fiber optics, just get a good light as your in the comfort of your own home or garage. I would probably just run one hose from the rheostat, than have a complete setup (high, low and air/water). Forexample, A Star slow speed Handpiece swivel without fiber optics can run a star highspeed handpiece no problem, and its like a quick disconnect, all you do is change handpieces, not the swivel and when you want air, you remove the hand piece and voila, air.

The compressor cost about $400-700 used, rheostat ~150, tubing and fitting from Homedepot for about $10.

Pm me if you need more info.

hey, i just wanted to update this thread for those who might be able to learn from my mistake. everyone who said to get an air compressor, rheostat, and handpieces are right on.

i purchased a dremel, and it definately isn't going to cut it! not only are the rpm's too low, but the handpiece doesn't have the 90 degree angle to the neck, so it's like cutting a prep with your straight handpiece!

so, here i go to find an air compressor, etc.

thank you rajan for your insight!

What type of air compressor do you have rajan (brand, etc). also what type of hosing do you need? could you please list in detail the items needed to have a working drill at home. pretend we are all first years and dont know anything about dentistry

I bought a Jun-Air.OF302-25B

Most of the item i used i just brought home from school seeing that i didnt have to worry about infection control (nice thing about typodont teeth)

I used it for cast trimming, pindexing (die-trim), prepping the occasional teeth, finishing custom trays, pretty much anything i needed it for.

Whats nice is that if i had lab work to finish, i didnt have to worry about sticking around in the **** hole, i call the school lab, and enjoy the freedom of eating, sleeping, doing some work at home and having the tv on or taking a break whenever I wanted.
