Hi, Pre-Dental Applicants!

One of the most important things you need to do before going to dental school is to start practicing manual dexterity.

How would you do that?

1. Get a pen and start using it like if you had a drill in your hand.

2. Use your ring finger in whatever hand you use and place it on
your chin and move the pen around side to side , front and back.

3. Get a mirror and start looking at things in reverse. Remember when
you work on the upper arch your going to have to be able to work
in revese.

Here are some tips you can start using to develop skills that you are not
told to be able to get an edge above other student in your class.

One of the secrets to passing dental school is confidence and mindset.
Another secret is to get a mentor that you can count on. Thank God I
had a great mentor. He Helped me keep focused on what my ultimate
goal was. Graduate dental school.

I have been a dentist for 22 years now.
I had the advantage of having clinical experience as a dental assistant.
This was a tremendous help. While my classmates were looking around
and not knowing anything at orientation I had an edge. This gave me
amazing confidence and it was a great motivator.

These small tips I hope will help you get started in the most wonderful
career that I love.

Good luck, and if this helps you let me know I will give you more tips.

This is exactly my point. You will be doing this kind of movement for 8 hours or more. If your muscles are fatigued now imagine what will happen when you need to produce?

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Yes, I am really the toothfairy😉

other tips:

Form groups to study for that will help you keep focused.

When doing dental anatomy lab use a knee hi to polish the wax.
faculty love to see polished wax.

When doing denture lab, mount casts with wax rims, then remove the rims
and set the teeth with soft wax.

Thanks Toothfairy for the advice!! 👍

I've been an RDH for a few years now, and I feel like it will help me when I begin dental school as well. I've been able to gain a lot of confidence with my mirror. I love using indirect vision, especially when cleaning the buccal of #14 and #15.

I'm excited to see how different/similar using the high-speed handpiece will be from using the slow-speed (RDH prophy) handpiece. I suppose rather than obtaining a fulcrum, it will be obtaining a finger rest.

If you really want to go to town, get a typodont and an electric handpiece; the Walgreens dental mirror is optional.
