We will at least work with them in anatomy labs, I assume.

we definately have to work on cadavers for our gross anatomy lab. It sounds scary but I bet your not the only one who feels uneasy at the sight of cadavers. I think you'll get use to it.

dont show your fear!! conquer!! lol. i dont look forward to that aspect of actually getting down with a cadaver, but we have to do it!

I know people who have done this. It's weird at first but they said after a while it's like your looking at a piece of meat, they specifically mentioned roast beef.

Are you asking about practicing dentistry or dissection? Hopefully for gross anatomy you'll have hands on cause thats the best way to learn this material.

don't be scared... it's not gonna bite you! it's just gonna smell really really bad

It's weird the first day, but then you get over it quickly. By the end of the semester, I was dissecting with my left hand and eating a ham sandwich with my right hand.

that's sad and rude to call the cadavers a piece of "roast beef". these people donated their bodies for our education for goodness sake! have a little sensitivity...

It's worse when people find dissecting frustrating and start yelling/hitting at the cadavers. It's sad, very sad, but some don't see how much giving those people are.

OP: It's not easy to get acquainted with at first, but if you see the science in it, you'll be fine. As someone mentioned, it's the best way to learn this material. I wish I had taken my prof's advice more seriously and spent more time in there. Come prepared.

<~~* 🙄 *Im a vegetarian (none taken)!
The cadavers are just like organs right (kidney, heart, etc.)
Or since it is dental school...Heads or mouth (oral cavity) took off the head! 😱 😕 I dont really know what you disect in d-school someone explain.................

we dissected head and neck very extensively, plus thorax and arms.

gross anatomy is such a stressful class, you're more worried about learning everything and have no time to be freaked out by the deadness.

SO you get to actually see the cadavers face?
If so that could be really depressing (but you have to do what you have to do...Thanx to all donors Dentist and Doctors learn more from actual experience) But it is a lil' creepy like maybe if your alone in the lab or the lights go out...(gotta stop im scaring myself) :scared:

lol. funny. if anything, not only the sights, but also the smell and formaldehyde will be ewwwwwwwww.

I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm sure I'll handle it fine.

Me thinks it looks more like cat food. Don't worry, everyone gets used to it.

This may be off subject a tad, but my undergraduate school offers a gross anatomy class for honors students that is taken with the medical students (that are attending the medical school). Would it be wise to take advantage of this opportunity, or wait until d-school?

med school gross anatomy curriculum is slightly different different from dental school gross anatomy curriculum (dental schools focus more on head and neck...for obvious reasons) so taking that gross anatomy class may force you to learn extra stuff you don't need. It is good preparation though because by the time you take it in dental school, you'll be familiar with the subject. It's your choice...gross anatomy is a time consuming course, and don't take it if you're already taking a full course load.

I'm not sure how else you would dissect the face without seeing it.

I took anatomy in my school and I dont regret it at all. It was a great experience and awesome practice. I really liked my class. 🙂

I took anatomy in undergrad. You do get used to the deadness but it still is disgusting. We were lucky though, they covered up the heads so we couldn't see their faces. One time though the cover kinda slipped off and that was really creepy.

Well in dental don't expect that cover to be on because the first thing you will do is head and neck. Basically I just viewed it as a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about the body first hand. No one in our class was disrespectful and generally if anyone is they are gone for good.

Maybe, I am strange, but I never really got used to it. I learned to relax a little at the end of the year, but I was soooo glad when it was over.

I know I missed out on a lot of learning because I didn't participate like I should have. I kind of regret that now, but I just couldn't get into it.

Sure why not. It can only be helpful.

I will be doing that next year. We have an very small, one station, cadaver lab that was setup specifically for students to do independent studies and for an advanced human anatomy course that only 16 students get to take per year. I was lucky enough to get in and feel pretty honored to get to do something so cool as an undergrad.

I think it will be a little strange the first day or two, but after that I think I will be fine.

Don't worry about it to much. Just remember what an honor it will be to get to have this opportunity which most people will never experience.

If any of you are really nervous, seeing a picture of a dead person/cadaver may be helpful in easing you into seeing the real thing. Google image search will work for those with strong stomachs or I would be glad to find a few very mellow cadaver photos for anyone with a weaker stomach not brave enough to give google a whirl (just let me know).

maybe we'll get lucky enough to have it already cut up and ready...last years bodies....hhehe

it's a good way to practice patient interaction with a corpse.

"say ahhhhhh....can someone hold his head please"

oh my goshhhh cryingggg ... sigh ... wondering what would they do if I actually faint in that class 🙁 🙁 ... would they kick me out Dental school ??? ... I'm really scare even attend to the funeral ... even my Grandma ... what should I do now ??? sigh ...

I remember one time my coworker sent out an email about Halloween, I didn't expect it will be scary, it's just some picture at the end turn out so scary and I was freaking out so bad and screamed out loud ...so my Manager came over and took me to the conference room since I shouldn't scream that loud at work 🙁 🙁

Please tell me how I could overcome this fear ???

Appreciated it !!!

People do pass out in gross anatomy (and don't get kicked out), and I don't think anyone really likes bodies (oh, and I would advise you to avoid the SDN pathology board). I suspect that most of your collegues who say "I can't wait for anatomy", are just trying to reassure themselves. Most dentists I have talked to were glad for anatomy to be over (especially the older generation that didn't wear gloves). In fact, one of my interviewers told me, "We could tour the anatomy lab, but it's closed...and I don't really like dead bodies". You can get through the class and you will learn a lot.

There will probably be a number of other people in your class that will have the same fears as you. You're not alone. You'll get used to it over time. Don't worry too much about it now. You are having a nervous breakdown and school hasnt' even begun.

Just stand back so if you do faint, you don't fall onto the body. 🙂

wow. relax, you'll be just fine. I'm sure you won't get kicked out of dental school, even if you do pass out once or twice. I've worked around A LOT of dead bodies, both in the cadaver lab and for the morgue (picking them up where they died, etc.) and the best thing I can tell you is to just find a thought or phrase that helps you put the situation into perspective. For me, when the going got tough I would just repeat to myself, "Just get it done!" (pronounced, "gett'er dun!!") then remember that the body I was looking at was really only the remnant or shell of a person--something, that when the life is gone is really quite mechanical. Just a series of systems and pathways that once facilitated life, but are no longer viable. As long as you can mentally separate the body that IS from the life and person it once represented you will be fine. Just hope it is no one that you used to know...that would be hard. And if it makes you feel better, the bad smell of formaldehyde is preferable to the wrenching stench of decomposition. So, just remember to find your mantra and when things get overwhelming--repeat it. GL :luck:

Speaking as a now 2nd year DS at Baylor woohoo!!!! I can tell you that gross lab is not that big of a deal......you start on the back and then after about 2 weeks you flip the body over and do the chest......then about half way through the class you take off the sheet that is on the head.....so it is gradual, you dont even see the face for a long time and there were a lot of nervous people to begin with but everyone survived and nobody got kicked out.......you dont even start gross for a couple of weeks at Baylor anyways so you have time to talk to others and get an idea of whats going to happen.......even then the first day of lab I think is just the instructor pulling up a body and showing you how to work the tank and all the insruments.....you will be fine.....if it is Baylor you are going to this fall let me know, if you are real concerned maybe I can help you out since I'll be a gross tutor there or I can let you know who the instructors are.....they are very cool and helpful

I took human dissection a few years ago and was SO nervous before my first insicision. But after that it wasn't so bad... relatively speaking! You learn so much more than just reading a book. THe only thing that sucked was the smell. Even washing your hands 4-5 times couldn't get rid of the stink. I found that if you rubbed an onion over your hands, it helped!!

you just have to burn your gross scrubs and coat and shoes......that smell does not come out

Until you cut it to ribbons, yes.

I say that partially tongue-in-cheek, but part of what makes anatomy lab easier over time is that the cadavers look progressively less human the further you dissect them.

Nobody likes it at first. Like fine wine, dead people are an acquired taste.

Nah....that's women. The older the berry, the sweeter the juice. 😱 😱

If anyone wants to avoid formaldehyde and real cadavers, go to NYU. Apparently they teach anatomy using plasticized cadavers similar to those used in the
"Body Worlds" exhibit. Others may argue that it may not be realistic enough, but it may turn out being beneficial, as they are easier to work with and more intact than real cadavers.
