I'm applying to both MD and DO schools. I interviewed at DMU and was accepted. I have an interview at CCOM but am putting it off until a later date because it didn't coordinate with other Chicago interviews. It's too bad because it's right by my alma mater Wheaton College :-(. My question is can D.O's practice internationally? I'm really interested in doing missionary medicine serving with a missions board. Would I run into problems if I had the D.O. degree? Also... did anyone here interview with my on Sept 15th at DMU? Did you guys get in?? You were a fun group of people.

The search function is a very powerful tool my friend.

Here is a recent thread that will explain where you have practice rights. Its taken from the AOA website as of July 2006.

Please remember the right to practice there doesn't give you the permanent license you'll need. Many countries don't let doctors practice from other countries without ties to the country, etc.

As for medical missions, there are missions in countries that don't even recognize DO's to my knowledge. Because you are with an organization who is visiting the country, it wouldn't matter if you were DO or MD.

Yes, DOs can practice internationally. DOs are able to practice in increasingly more and more countries around the world due to the efforts of mission trips and groups like SOMA. You'll have to do a little research to find out which places. Actually look at the link above + Mali. DMU's mission projects in Mali contributed to it becoming one of the countries that give DOs full practicing privileges (as of three weeks ago). Congrats on getting into DMU.

Just a caveat

The list on that site referenced is far from updated. The best way to find out if an American trained D.O. has practice rights is to contact the health department of the country or principality you are interested in and find out from them directly.

From the research I have done you will have absolutely no more problems doing missions work in almost any country than with a M.D. degree. However it is a little bit harder to get "licensed" in a country, but you don't need to actually be licensed in most developing nations to do aid work.
