how easy is it to practice at xx-city/town of your choice? i come from orange county, CA which is probably highly sought out by many because of how rich people are there + the weather is nice. i've had a few friends who recently finished their residencies but cannot find a contract with the local hospitals and hence cannot start their own practice. i'm afraid i won't make it back to the OC.

If location is a major priority, it should figure into specialty choice. I want to end up practicing in NYC, and think my choice of anesthesiology will allow me to do that. Of course, I picked the field for other reasons too.. but I would not have picked a field that required me to live in Kansas in order to find a job. Choose wisely, market conditions matter!

ahem?

no you're right actually. most of kansas blows.

Hahah, after reading this post I’ve spent the last 30 min. looking at property in orange county…. I think I might practice there too… looks expensive, but nice; plus I luv the TV show! 🙄

I guess choosing a less competitive specialty, or one that is in lots of demand will help your chances of practicing wherever you want. If u pick something like CT surgery your job opportunities will probably be limited.
