Pre-dents, What's your job?

Hey guys,

I'm currently applying to dental schools and work at a retail store doing sales. I HATE retail (a big reason why I love dentistry - I can be my own boss and I will call all the shots - but we all need money and do what we must to get by) I feel out of place here, and need a new job till dental school starts.

The thing is, I'm having trouble finding one with a bio degree. I'm in my off year...what do you guys do for your job? I would really appreciate some ideas, I want to make atleast 20 an hour, and I feel that should be possible with a B.S. I am a computer whiz so I've been looking around for something in IT but finding positions locally has been hard. I live in chicago suburbs.

Are you looking for something science-related? I worked in labs for the past few years, and unfortunately, this might be more difficult than you think, degree or not. Wage is sometimes based primarily on previous experience, not level of education. At least that was my experience.

I have several bosses, department manager, assistant manager, front end manager and store manager. They're all *****s in their own special way. The assistant manager is a raging alcoholic whose medical record is the size of the yellow pages, yet continues smoking, drinking and thinks hes the ****. If I sell more then him (happens often) he tries to show me up and makes stupid jokes - a douche in general. The front end manager makes no effort to cover her dislike of stupid customers and gets bitched at quite frequently (many complaints) and she wonders why lol...and we all hear about it. The department manager sits on his fat ass all day in the back office playing on his iphone and barks orders. Store manager does same thing, and he creeps on you from the opposite side of the store behind the aisle to see what you're doing, and is just all around annoying mofo.

I've learned a lot working here though that will help me immensely when I'm a dentist. You get a better idea for how to deal with different personalities and unpleasant situations, and I've grown a thick skin.

pharma industry - Quality Operations Biologist (fancy way of saying lab tech)
I'm not sure if there is much in pharma in Chicago, but you should check the local med schools and see if there are any openings for lab techs in the research labs. Some pay well, while some pay peanuts.

Agree, you will be limiting your options greatly by setting a 'minimum' (unless that is what you need to get the bills paid) I currently work as a research analyst in science and the job market is extremely competitive with people of all backgrounds jockeying for a job that pays even 15 an hour.

You could always try to have two part time jobs, then you would be able to 'escape' the one that is really terrible by doing something else with your time during the week, which might make it more enjoyable.

This really depends on the lab that you would join. Some labs really just want someone to do crap work, in others, if you prove yourself, techs can become close to grad students with regard to autonomy on a project.

If you are looking for something that is short term, being up front about your time frame may be helpful to land a position. Grant funding is extremely tight right now and if a PI knows they would only have to pay you for a year or two (instead of career or longer term) it might help you (but could also work against you of course)

My advice would be to try and find someone who works in or around a place that you know and talk with them, usually jobs are posted internally first, and if you have the heads up you have the chance to directly contact the person (avoiding HR, which slows everything down). Good luck👍

Belittling people... may be its the opposite... they think you are a complete ***** who cant even find a good job so you came begging to them... I am pretty sure even if they gave you the store to run it for a day, you wouldn't be able to do it better than them. You do not have experience or skills.

ps... if you believe everyone around you is a *****, and you are the only one who is smart... well my friend its the opp.

I'm guessing you've never worked in retail, or in a toxic environment such as this and so you have no clue what its like. I don't think every ones a *****, dont make mass assumptions. I go above and beyond to help my customers, and am consistently one of the top rated salesmen in my district, so please stfu about my skills, you don't even know me or my resume. I could run the store far better, and I'll treat my future employees far better than these tools. I am damn good at my job..it pays relatively well as I get paid comission and I sell a lot. These people are just idiots and there is no excuse for their behavior.

I get $500 every 2 weeks in my research job. I live in Gainesville, so housing is cheap and living is very affordable. I'm sure in larger areas the compensation is likely higher, but I work part-time and go to school too.

Clinical lab tech. Good entry level $$$ for bio bacc. Potential for Dr. contact. No homework. Check your local hospitals for openings. They usually want you to be certified, but if you push hard and convince them you are a quick learner they may take you. Check histology.

i applied to over 60 lab tech positions all over new jersey and FL and couldnt land a single one.

its all good though, i got a job at a tutor at a local college. 35 hrs/wk 13/hr. its not bad, pretty fun actually.

Sorry to hear about the difficulty in finding a lab tech job...I can imagine that's frustrating. My advice:
Go find the wildest job you can think of in a place you would never think of living. You don't really have much time left to do something totally different. Be adventurous on a big scale! Dental schools will still accept your application when you return from your adventure.

I was planning to go to the Peace Corps, but ended up teaching 2nd grade in the Deep South with Teach For America. Never expected to be teaching 8 year olds how to subtract, nor did I expect to enjoy it this much. Life is too short to be working in a place where you don't feel like you are being valued, or using your skills and talents to bring value to others. Go get 'em!

Colgate - summer research program..

did you just try in like univ. or did you try in big industries too...? b/c usually some of my friends who were bio majors have found jobs in those places... They do full time ~37 hours i believe pay is not bad either i think one of them makes around 25-30 an hr

yeah i applied to all of those places in the industry market. they all wanted ppl with years of industry experience. i did a year of periodontal research in a lab during undergrad but even that wasnt enough.

But have you taken your Resume to your Carrier development center at your school. B/c even though they require years of experience some can have exceptions. You just have to word things differently and make them look more imp. than what it was... in a way exaggerate it.

but my friends have gotten it w/o even 6 months of experience.

Did you just apply online and waited from them to contact you?
or did you apply then every week called HR to see what the status of your app. was? -b/c they like people who take action into their own hands.

You turned this thread downhill with your initial post, I had no beef with you prior. Don't be so quick to judge and make assumptions (like you did above and made yourself look stupid), it'll be your downfall. Go to jobvent.com, it'll open your eyes as to what can happen at the work place. Better yet, comment on someones vent by saying they shouldn't "belittle" their sadistic boss, and see what response you get from that person (my bet is a big and well deserved FU).

To OP, i think that if you don't like your job, you should quit and find a new one. It's hard to look for a job when you are already working. Once you are out of job, you will be more motivated in searching.

And if you quit a retail job, that's not giving up! what exactly are you giving up anyway? it's not like you were faced with a challenge that you couldn't overcome.

Lab tech jobs aren't easy to come by these days because of the economy. Maybe you should go to your local research university and see if any of the labs is hiring. It won't pay well,, but you can find yourself a nice gf/bf in the process 😛.
Or you can get certified for plumbing and work as a plumber, they get paid well 🙂 (i considered this and i almost went through with it)

When I was going to school full-time for RDH, I worked retail...yep, not the most glamorous job in the world. It seemed to attract some of the rudest people in the area. I quickly realized that "I cannot please everyone." So, I quit stressing about trying to make everyone else happy. I did that for 2 years during school. Then, I graduated and began working as an RDH. Great fit for me. Find the right fit for you, and I understand the stress you're going through. Best of luck.
