Hey all

Thanks for checking out this thread. I have an interview this upcoming Friday, and the dinner will be hosted at a resident's house on Thursday night. The attire is being described as casual.

I'll probably do jeans and a dress shirt, but was wondering what I should bring. Usually I bring alcohol to a party (obviously) or food to a dinner (obviously). What should I bring with me here? Beer? Wine? Nothing?

His phone number is listed, so I may just text him and ask if he wants me to bring anything in particular.

Thoughts would be much appreciated.

Bring yourself and your personality, your significant other.. nothing else unless specifically requested to bring something

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but given the comment above that the pre-interview dinner is part of the interview: To what extent is an applicant disadvantaged if they are unable to attend? My understanding is that it can't hurt you to miss it, but it can help you to attend if you show up and make a good impression. (And I guess that means it can hurt you to miss it insofar as you are foregoing the opportunity to really make a good impression).

But is it generally correct that you're not docked any "points" for missing the dinner? My school limits how many shifts I can miss each rotation for interviews, so it's just not possible to attend some pre-interview dinners for out-of-region interviews.

Let us (residents) figure out the food and alcohol. You just show up and don't be obnoxious.

The only way dinner affects your chances of matching with us is if you're among the most awkward people we've met (ever), you're inappropriate (get drunk, kiss a resident, etc), or you're the absolute coolest person we've ever met.

Yes, that is correct that you are not docked points or anything, in general, for most programs. Things you can do to help ensure that you won't be seen as uninterested:
-- have a good excuse for not going to dinner- couldn't catch an earlier flight, couldn't get time off from rotation are good excuses.
-- apologize to program for not being able to be there and say that you regret that you missed the opportunity to chat with the residents, & thank them for the invite.
-- DONT LIE about why you weren't there- ie don't say to the PD you couldn't make it in time and then tell a resident that you didn't make it bc you were out catching up/partying with friends in town.

Good luck all, have fun on interviews.
And agree with above that OP doesn't need to bring anything.

You should not be expected to bring anything.

That being said, there's no need to forgo your usual social graces. A text saying "Hi there, it's TPSReport. Can I bring anything to the gathering on Thursday?" would not be wrong.

If this is our pre-interview dinner I'm expecting tequila and strippers.

Example of your typical EM pre-interview dinner:
