What are y'all wearing to the dinner the night before? Business/ward wear, or social (not clubbing, obviously, but fancy dinner out) wear?

I was recommended business casual. I am a girl and I wore black pants with a nice blouse and a colored sweater type thing. One guy wore a dress shirt and tie and another guy wore slacks and a sweater with a collared shirt underneath. I personally didn't think the sweater guy was dressy enough. Perhpahs it was because it looked like an older sweater. The guy in the tie didn't look our of place as 2 of the 3 male residents wore ties.

I was told business casual but I was a guest at one of these dinners and saw more casual than business dress.

Agreed. Business casual is the way to go for the pre-interview dinners (ie. shirt +/- tie).

Of interest, most program directors do get some degree input from their residents. This 'input' usually comes in the form of major negatives. I only know of one program that - when I was interviewing - actually had the residents rate the interviewees; this is not a common practice.

IMO, there's no need to be on interview-mode, but it would make sense not to say anything too negative or opinionated at these dinners. As the saying goes, "the nail that stands up gets hammered." Just be your pleasant self and enjoy the meal.
