Pre-Interview Update Letters?

I've heard two sides to sending LOI's pre-interview. One, that they are useless because the adcom rarely even gets to read them and they have usually already made a decision. The other side says that they show your interest and can be especially useful if you are on hold and will be re-reviewed or if you have yet to be reviewed.

Anyone have any experience/suggestions about this? LizzyM, can you weigh in?

From what I've always heard it's more of a get you off the waitlist/speed up the re-review of your application post-interview.

I think it's alot less helpful if they haven't already decided to interview you.
