I just received an invite to participate in a pre-matriculation program at UPitt and was wondering what you all thought about these programs? It seems like a 5-week basic course overview with anatomy, biochem, genetics, etc., and they pay you $1k. I'm a philosophy major, so I haven't yet had these classes, and I also don't have any real summer plans, aside from relaxing (which seems valuable, too). I couldn't find any info by searching. Does anyone here know anything about these programs and whether or not they're important? Thanks.

Seems like a no brainer if they pay you to take classes that will help make your first year easier!

They are good in prepping you for anatomy. You will get out of it only what you put into it, however, you will be burned out a lot earlier than the rest of the class. It is up to you.Either way, you will be okay.

i'm planning on doing a similar program too - i was also concerned about the burnout thing, but it seems worth it since 1) getting paid 2) have time to get familiar with a completely different place and 3) will hopefully, as a non-science major, be able to get more comfortable w/anatomy etc. - leading to a less stressful 1st year

I looked at the materials for the pre-mat program at Pitt - it's not a ridiculous amount of work, just enough to get you exposed and not burnt out prior to school. It will definitely give you a step up in terms of getting to know the Pittsburgh area, look for housing and roommates (if you haven't done so already), and get an idea of the kind of work that you'll be doing in the Fall. I wish that I could do the program, but I have to work and can't afford to start that early or take the pay cut.

Best of luck and see you in the fall,
H&T
