The general consensus is that if your school has a committee you should use it as you will have to have a very good reason for not using the committee.

There are quite a few of us in the same boat committee letter wise, and while it sucks, I suggest you just wait it out and make sure you have everything else done as soon as you can (secondaries, etc) so when your letters are finally done you will be ready to review immediately.
