I am always reading threads where people causally mention they dorm, and not often do I see any mention of commuters, so I just want to see any other commuters.

I my self am a commuters, I commute about 30 miles on the way to school and 28-30 on the way back (differ route, adjusting to traffic reports). Total 58-60 miles daily. Time one way is about on average 50-55 mins. Way back can range from 45-1 hour.

As a curious side note, how many credits do other fellow commuters take ?
Also how do you commute ?

I am taking 16 in the spring.
I used to take the bus, it was terrible. The bus ride alone was 1 hour 15 mins, each way on average. I didn't factor in the time it takes to get to the bus stop, and be picked up and go home either.
Now at the start of the fall 2010 I got a car 🙂 (nothing fancy but I save tons of time commuting !)

I bike... granted it's only two miles but biking in cold weather is no fun 🙁

I commute. On Mondays and Wednesday I drive to school (1/2 hr away) then back home (1/2 hr) then later at 1630, I drive back to school (1/2 hr) and then back home. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I just drive back and forth once. This is all because of babysitting and accounts for six hours weekly of commuting just for school. If work is included, I commute about 10.5/hrs weekly. I'm currently taking 15 CH.

4-year commuter here. About 20 mi / 30 mins one-way. Currently taking 18 credits.

Also about 20 miles/30 minutes. But when traffic sucks it can take a lot longer. 🙁

Oh the joy of not going to school in a big city.

16 credit hours, and about a 20 minute drive. Might be only 15 minutes if I stop driving like an old lady

I have the pleasure of waking up at 6AM to drive to DC at 645AM and hopefully arrive by 720AM to eat breakfast/review/nap.

15-20 miles I'm guessing

Just get on the highway, takes literally 10 min at the least

For my post-bac I had to drive about 15 miles, or 30 minutes one way. Last semester my one 8am class was a killer to my sleep schedule especially since I work evenings.

Same here. I have to get up at 6 to get the kiddos ready in order to be in lecture by 8 AM Monday through Thursday. Yuck. It better all be worth it! 🙂

Community college at the moment, and for the last 2 years, won't be commuting next fall.

Right now, 19 miles, 18 minute drive, and I'm taking 15 units. I often hang out at school and study there for a while before driving home.

I can't relate exactly but I took Chem Lab in the summer (I and II), and lab starts at 8:30, and my first month I didn't have a car, so I would take the bus, I would wake up at 5:50, get dropped or take another bus to the bus terminal, and then catch a bus to my college. Just made it a little bit before lab started. Session II I got to use the old car (that belongs 🙂 to me now) and I would wake up at 6:30 and make it to lab with 10-15 mins to spare.

My college is in a big city, terrible traffic, I am sure we all know how sucky that is.

Now that is dedication! City traffic sucks balls. 🙂

Back when I was a pre-med, I took 20 credits/semester and commuted 10-12 miles everyday. The first 2 years was via bus/subway and it took 1.5 hrs, the last 2 by car took 20 minutes.

Now, in med school, I still commute 10-12 miles everyday by car.

My university was 17 miles away which took about 1 hour in the morning. Coming home it would take about 30 minutes. My community colleges have all been 1 mile to 8 miles away. That would be about 15 minutes walking or 10 minutes driving. During my last semester (summer) at the university, my car broke down just before classes started. I had to take the bus for 8 weeks, 3 times a week (maybe 4) for a history class that was suppose to satisfy my last general ed requirement. That took me 2 hours to get there and another two to get back, plus waiting time. So I would spend about 5 hours each day on the bus.

The bus is rough. I didn't have a driver's license when I first went to school and had to take the bus everyone. Talk about a scary and time consuming.

On my second semester of commuting around 45 minutes to campus everyday, taking 16 credits. Its good to know I'm not alone doing it 😉

I live in New York City and my school is about 10 miles away... On days when I end at 10:00 PM, it takes me six minutes to commute back home.. 😀

HOWEVER, when I have an 8:00 AM class, I have to leave my house at 7:00 because the commute takes a staggering 50 minutes. one day, it took me 73 minutes to get there.. i actually timed it, because the highway was THAT stuck. 😡

I used to go by bus, then taking the underground. It takes me over an hour, but in rush hours it can be even two hours. Driving takes even longer, so I wasted money on a car I rarely use...

I'm about five minutes away, but it takes a half an hour since I ride the bus.

My bus was filled with the weirdest people, no offence to people that ride it but it was ghetto. I once had this guy sit next to me, and he was massive, about 6'4 and built and he was drunk out of his mind, and kept talking crap but I didnt say anything , because of the sheer size of the dude, I lied to him to get away lol. Other times I've had to stand for the better part of the whole ride due lack of seat.

Some myths I would like to share:

1. Not possible to study on a Bus
(I am talking about city buses, you cant study on them, very tough)

2. They are vertically challenged, I am 6'1 and I am very cramped leg room wise in a bus.

3. Terrible lighting at night

4. Don't ever over sleep on a bus, I feel asleep once and the driver didnt wake me up, even though my stop is the very last stop, and he was going back to the garage where the bus is parked and I had to walk from the random town I was in all the way to the terminal.

(can't think of anymore)

10-11 miles, depending on which route I take due to traffic. Depending on traffic, anywhere from 20-45 mins one way. I have never taken less than 20 credits, and am taking 23 this semester. Very do-able.

My College is like 26 minutes from my home and i drive everyday! But due to a lot of traffic it usually takes me 30-35 minutes to get there.
I am taking 15 credits in spring 2011!
Bio II-4 credits
Chem II-4 credits
Calc I-4 credits
Philosophy & social ethics-3 credits

Bus, then metro (the subway), and bus again! 😱

38 miles / ~50 minutes each way.

I've taken 12 credits a semester for the past 3 semesters (3 lab based classes + labs.)
I took 15 credits (no labs) when I commuted 6 miles / ~10 minutes each way.

Talk about a unique EC. After I had an hour and a half commute every day for 4 years, I have since refused to live further than 30 minutes away from school.

Haha, I say the same almost. I saw when I go to med school I am DORMING !

And a side note; I am sure many of you have done it, but some times if I get to campus early I go to a desolated room and take nap in their (only awkward part is when you wake up in a puddle of drool and a prof is staring at you, telling you he has a class to teach, and the other students staring at you. And then of course the sprint to your next class).

And I am not sure if this has occurred to many other but if your ever in a hurry and cant shower, drive to school go to the gym, and take a shower their. I mean why not ? The showers are their anyway lol. I keep my work out stuff, and I have shampoo and soap in their and a towel anyway and if i ever run extremely late it comes in handy. 😉

Oh yeah, I'll definitely be dorming at med school, or at least living much closer! I hate spending 4 hours everyday commuting. I try to study on the bus/train, but it's pretty hard for me (especially if you have to stand!)

Thanks for the advice Godric! I tend to sleep whenever/where ever I can haha 😴
