I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct section to post this, however; it does relate to pre-med because it has to do with my required labs that are only mere weeks away.

I wear contacts normally, but after reviewing my school's lab policy about no contacts allowed ( due to the risk of some vapors melting them to your eyeballs 😱 ), I decided to invest some money into prescription lab goggles rather than fighting the discomfort in wearing regular glasses underneath lab goggles. I've found a pair but they aren't quite clear on the page as to whether or not they meet standard lab requirements.

There are protective shields on the sides and top but otherwise, look like a regular pair of glasses. I'm not 100% on the rules on these boards about linking to other sites, but I'm going to go for it anyway. If it's not allowed, I apologize now.

So what do you guys think? Lab worthy? Or don't bother?

I think these goggles are more for splash protection than for blocking chemical vapors. It's probably better to be careful and get glasses or at least talk with the post-doc or professors. Ask about the protocols and possible fumes that could be made through those reactions. Observe how people conduct their experiments. Do people follow proper safety precaution (Eg. conducting chemical reaction in a well vented hood).

prescription goggles are INCREDIBLY unnecessary.

I don't mean to shoot you down, but the contact lense warning is just a precaution. I wear contacts and have been through numerous pre-med labs. yes you have to wear goggles, no it doesnt matter if you have contacts... hell you can even wear glasses under your goggles if you are worried about it.

Now i actually worked full time in an organic chem research lab and I spend an abundant amount of time around chemicals and reactions.... I wear contacts every day and rarely wear goggles. Its just not that big a deal, we work in fume hoods and use precaution, if Im doing something that might splash, I throw on goggles.

My contacts have never become a liability, and its certainly not worth spending money on prescription goggles.

sorry i missed the part about contacts being illegal.

just wear glasses under your goggles, its really not that uncomfortable.

haha those prescription glasses, or goggles if u want to call them, aren't going to cut it when you have 15M HCl coming at you.

Anyhow, just purchase the school goggles and wear your glasses under them. You'll survive. GL

Those won't fly. You'll be required to get something that looks like this:

Wearing glasses under goggles sucks, but that's just the way life goes. Sorry.

All those things really are is a regular pair of frames, perhaps with shatter proof lenses, and the little side things that snap on.
You can go and get yourself a decent looking pair of frames at your eye doc and get the snap on things (pieces of crap). But, I wouldn't bother.

It will be a sad day when some acetone fogs the lenses on your shiny new $$$ prescription glasses. If this is an undergraduate class then there is nothing THAT dangerous as long as you aren't sticking your face directly over beakers of dangerous chemicals and use a fume hood.

It's not like the TA or Prof will know whether you wear contacts or not so it's not that big of a deal. My bench partner never wore gloves and he was fine (I definitely would not suggest doing this though, just trying to show how little danger there really is).
