I have heard from a lot of medical schools that they prefer students from varied backgrounds and perspectives- aka non-science majors. Does this put typical biology/chemistry majors at a disadvantage due to their lack of a unique perspective?

Science major =/= lack of a varied perspective. It's more to do with the student as a whole. There are students who absolutely adore science and will express themselves with it to the fullest, and that I think would be unique in itself.
