This is my first post in a long time but I need advice on what to do...

I'm going to UT at San Antonio a year from now and am considering transferring eventually to UT at Austin after a year or two.

Is transferring from a not so great school to a better school a good idea? Should I just go ahead and stay at UTSA all 4 years and do what I need to do to get into med-school? Is it better to go to UTSA, get all my pre-reqs out of the way (supposedly easier all around school), then transfer for the name? How will this hurt me in the whole applying to med-school process?

If transferring is a good idea... How many years max should I wait before transferring? 1 or 2?

Thanks to all... I appreciate the advice.

If your sole reason for transferring is to go to a school with a better name then my opinion is it's not worth it. As long as you learn the things you need to learn and do well on the MCAT you should be fine. Transferring can really be a pain. I transferred after my sophomore year and ended up having to go five years as a result. Not all of my credits transferred into my major. If you still really want to transfer, I would do it after your first year. That way there would be less of a chance of not having classes transfer since most courses freshman year are pretty standard.
Just my two cents. 🙂

I transferred to UT from Tulane (which I guess was techinically a "step down" although from my experience UT was MUCH better) after my first year. If you're not happy at UTSA, transfer. I can vouch for UT Austin as a great school and a place with a ton of pre-med and other opportunities.

UT Austin is a bigger name and will probably help a little bit with getting schools, especially outside of Texas, to look more seriously at your application. I'd say transfer after one year, since you'll have an easier time integrating yourself into UT. Plus, your activities there will be longer-term, which is good for applications. Keep your GPA really high at UTSA, because that's really the only thing that UT Austin cares about for transfer students. I'm assuming you're not in the CAPS program . . . is it too late to apply for that? It would guarantee your transfer.

Good luck! Hook 'em!
