Hi there. I am a seventeen year old female student who is currently schooling in a Singapore junior college. I am going to be in junior college 2 next year. The system that Singapore uses differs from that of the US and the UK. Basically, I will be eligible to enter university after I take my A levels next year (assuming I pass...). I am curious as to know what exactly a pre-medical course is and what colleges offer these courses.

From the Internet searches I did, I found mainly American colleges but nothing on UK colleges. However, I did find some information from UK universities.

So, I have listed a few questions about pre-medical courses/programmes:

1. Are the courses/programmes available in any UK college?
2. What are the pre-requisites in getting into these colleges and the programmes/courses?
3. Where or who can I contact for more information on enrolling into these institutions?
4. What does a pre-medicine course/programme cover?
5. Is it a one year programme or is the period of study longer than that?

I would greatly appreciate any information on this issue. Thanks in advance and I would also like to wish everyone a Merry belated Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance. ^^

Tammy Goh

Your best bet is to call overseas med school admissions office (St. George). You can visit them at www.sgu.edu
They typically deal with lots of foreign student from UK/Ireland etc. following their schooling system. They have admissions office in NY. You can look up their phone number and call them. They shuld be able to point you in the right direction.
Good luck.

Hi. What medical schools are you hoping to apply to/attend after you finish college? The requirements for schools in US, UK, etc... can differ. I would try and come up with a list of medical schools you wish to apply to, and go to each school's website or call them. From that you should look for what their requirements are of applicants. Atleast for US medical schools they will tell you what courses are needed and how many credits of each in order for you to be considered for a position in the medical school. Seems like that might be a place to start, but finding what courses the med schools you are interested in want you to have, you can then look for colleges/universities that offer all the pre-med courses you need. I hope that helps, if its just confusing let me know 🙂 Good Luck to you & congrats on getting a head start on this process :luck:

~I found this site, that lists European med schools, you might be able to find useful information about the medical schools and what they require. The UK schools are at the bottom

Thank you both very much for the information. It has helped greatly. ^^ I'll try out the methods suggested first before I decide on my next move. Thanks again and may the both of you have a great new year. ^^ Take care.
