so my school requires us to do two physics courses.

I've had Physics in high school before and I thought it was just very time consuming compared to other subjects such as Bio and Chem.

do your colleges require you do Physics I and II
also
does YOUR college give you another alternative to choose from besides Physics?

I'm getting a biochem degree and the only options I have are upper division or lower division. I took lower division at a CC.

Do you mean do some pharmacy schools require two semesters of physics? I think some do - University of Minnesota comes to mind. Other's only require one semester. My school requires one and there's no other option.

Physics isn't so bad if one has a good teacher (which I did not - well, I taught myself since the lectures were so worthless - I was pretty good 🙂 ). I didn't think it was nearly as time consuming as organic chemistry was.

Its been a year since I took my physics class as a junior. and it still bugs me. my teacher was pretty good..he was extremely patient with us when we worked out problems..
but this was in a high school honors class so I'm dreading what it'll be like in college 😱

Bite the bullet and tough it out. 90% of pharmacy schools require 1 semester of college level physics. Do a search on this board and you'll quickly see it's THEE WORSE pre-req for us pharmacy kids. Think of it as a right of passage. 😀

As long as it's an algebra based Physics, it's really not hard at all.

Calculus based Physics is a different story.

Both the schools I'm applying to require two semesters of algebra based courses.

Yep, algebra based physics isn't bad at all. I actually somewhat enjoyed it. I guess it does depend on your professor. I took the first physics at a large univeristy then the second one at a CC during a summer semester. The cc was way easier, but I'm convinced it was probably because the professor had a better teaching method. Even though my first physics was algebra based, the professor would pretty much derive equations on the board the whole time so it was really nothing but a flashback to calculus (of course we didn't have to do this on the exam, but I felt as if he was wasting time by not focusing on the overall concepts). Overall, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your biologies and chemistries are probably weighted a little more with pharm schools anyway. Just my opinion though. 😀

UF requires 2 semesters of physics with the labs, either algebra based or calculus based (your choice). The lab actually helps boost your grade if you can find a college that combines the lab with the class. Physics lab is fun, too.

I still laugh when people talk about "Algebra based Physics" - just to let you know - you cant have Physics without Calc - They are bound at the hip.

The difference? In Physics with Algebra - they give you a boatload of formulas and tell you to memorize them. In Physics with Calc - they give you a boatload of formulas, but explain how they are derived from each other.

Personally - I thought Organic Chemistry was more difficult then Physics w/ Calc. Find a good professor, and you should be fine.

Physics is E-VIL. UIC requires two semesters. I took the Algebra Based Physics, and still, it sucked. They wonder why people hate that class. Why everyone, if they can at UIC take it somewhere else. Maybe it's the 32 out 100 test averages? I don't know.

This still does not change the fact that they offer both Physics courses in which you must derive the formulas with Calculus and those which you don't.

I also agree that Organic Chemistry took alot more work on my part than any Physics course ever did.

I didn't realize there was a difference although my university offered General Physics and just Physics (which was for those majoring in that subject). I tried to take Physics 1 - loved the lecture, failed the course. Or I would have had I not withdrawnn. 🙁

You know, I thought the same thing coming out of high school. I graduated from a class of 17 in a small town in AR. I had the same teacher for all of my science classes from 7th-12th grade. I took Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. There was no such thing as Honors, or AP at my HS. I just knew there was no way I could possibly be prepared for college level. Strange enough, 10 years after high school, when I finally took my first science class, I realized if you got the basics, the first few weeks is review and everything else builds from there. I got A's in G-Chem, and Physics, B's in O-Chem. It really wasn't all that different than High School, the only difference was my teachers Had PhD's instead of BS/MS.
