Hey guys,

I'm wondering if it's okay to get my premedical committee letter from my post bacc school that I'm attending now instead of where I went for undergrad.

Also about Shadowing a DO. How long did you guys work for them? A week? A month? And what did you do because the last doctor I talked to said there wasn't much due to patient confidentialitly.

Thanks!

I would think that is exactly where you would go for your LOR. I am in a post bacc program and had a totally different undergrad degree. It would seem illogical to go to your old undergrad for their committee letter. Ask your pre med advisor but I would think you would have to stick with your pre med committee that you have now.

Hi-

i'm a grad student in the same boat and i went through committee at my current (graduate) school. i haven't had any problems yet. i would just make sure to get at least one letter from a prof at your ug school.

hope this helps...

edit: as an afterthought, all of the post-baccs at my current school are also going through committee here, not their ug school...

I could not find a DO office that would let me shadow their DOs. So I contacted the region chair for the AOA in my area. He agreed to meet with me and basically gave me an hour long interview. AFter meeting with me and reading my essay he wrote my LOR. SO if your truely can't find a DO who will let you shadow, the see if they would meet with you and write the letter from that meeting. Fax them your essay and any secondary essays you have written. It got me my letter. (a side note...i grew up with a DO family doc so I was aware of the DO profession)

As to your letter from post or undergrad....I would check with the schools where you are applying and see if they object to the one you want to get. It may not matter to them, but it is alwasy good to check with them.

Good luck.

I don't quite understand what you mean by the patient confidentiality thing. That just means you are restricted in how you treat that information, not that you can't shadow a physician and directly interact with a patient. Regulations do not prohibit that.

I chose not to use my schools committee and instead asked some professors directly for letters. They were happy to do so.
