Its like every pharmacy school that I look at has 1 or 2 pre-reqs that another pharamcy school doesnt require...

for example some schools require calc 2, world history 2, sociology, economics, and statistics...

whats a good consensus of pre-reqs to have to make sure that I can apply to most of the schools out there?

Look at the schools you are going to apply to and take all of their pre-reqs. I recommend going to the PharmCAS site and looking under the School Pages link. That gives you a break down of each course required and how many credits.

I agree w/ Rxlea, don't plan for every single school. Choose a handful of schools that seem a good "fit" and then plan accordingly.

Physics 2, O. Chem II, Calc, and Anat + Physio should take care of most schools.

Some schools require Physics II. Some require Physics Lab II. Some require just Physics I and no lab.

Some require Calc II.

Some require either 1 or 2 semesters of Anatomy and Physiology. Others may only require 1 semester of Physiology (like mine).

Humanities is where all bets are off. Some schools don't care what you take as long as it's not some science class. Others require humanities to include classes in specific departments like history, foreign language, etc. Others have specific classes that you likely won't find at your school.

Just gotta find a group of schools whose pre-reqs you'll be able to satisfy.

I think physics, English, calculus, statistics, cell bio and micro bio, orgo and thermochemistry, and humanities/social sciences courses will do 🙂

I don't quite understand people fretting about prereqs... I really do not think they vary by THAT much from school to school. I got a BS in Biology and Psychology, and that has covered any prereqs I might need from the schools I have looked into and applied to, minus speech. See, this is part of the reason why I think schools should require BS/BA degrees. It would take care of this slightly different requirements from school to school. Knocks out all most of the general prereqs - and if you are a science major, particularly chem or bio, it virtually knocks out all your prereqs. Except speech. Speech is the oddman out.

It seems like most of the people I talked to there were required to take Microbiology and Anatomy/Lab, physiology/lab, and such, which I was never required to take.

Yep, this is notorious of the whole pharmacy application process. Have you seen Temple's pre reqs? They require like Mosaic II or something LOL. So strange.

Hmmm, well, I am only one out of .... thousands and thousands of applicants. I went to undergrad at a PA school. I took all those classes you mentioned - and then some. Most people at my undergrad do complain about all those classes we have to take ... guess it paid off in the end. I only need to take ... speech.

But I do understand the frustration of different set of prereqs across schools. There should really be a system in place.... if most schools can agree to use PharmCAS, why can't they agree on a set of prereqs?

I had a major issue with that as well. I wanted to apply to Purdue, but they required Calc 2 and I was not going to take a class just to apply to one school. Anyways, I went to PharmCAS and looked at every single participating school's requirements and marked all the schools which requirements I met. I ended up with 41 schools. I obviously was not going to apply to all of them, so I narrowed it down to location and average GPA of accepted first year students. I applied to about 14 schools, invited to interview at 10, declined 6 and interviewed at 4. I didn't bother filling out two supplemental apps since I was accepted to a top choice.

I think that's the best option to give you an idea of how many schools you can apply to.

I recommend that everyone starting out in pre-pharmacy bookmarks that thing, as it lists all schools and their pre-reqs.

I really wanted to apply to Nova but they require macro AND micro which is really odd since its pharmacy not business school.

I was in the exact situation. It's so bizarre. I was not about to take that class just to apply to Nova. 🙄

if you have the time (semesters remaining) and money to take a lot of classes, then to be safe i would recommend (besides the well-known chem, bio, ochem, phys):

-a&p, 8 credits! (this is the one i'm battling right now)
-economics, 3 credits
-stat, 4 credits
-english, 6 credits
-speech, 3 credits
-psych, 3 credits (i had to take intro to psych this last semester with a bunch of freshmen...felt very out of place)
-some foreign language
-calc I and II! just in case, calc II isnt too bad anyway
-micro class/lab, 4 credits
-bmb class/lab, 4 credits
-and some general humanities and social sciences, but most schools require enough of those for you to get a BS anyway

yeah it's a lot, but better safe than sorry later on when you're actually applying.

Honestly, I'm currently going through this application process right now and the process is still underway. But if I were to do it all over again, I would have applied early decision to my state school. So, if you have a state school that has early decision and you have done your research on it, then go that way. State schools have funding and good reputations for the most part. You save a lot of money, time and energy this way. And you know which courses you must take and whether the school will accept them. But that's just me. Hind sight is always 20/20.
