Im looking to apply for the next admissions cycle later this summer, and although I am a biology major i have not gotten around to completing courses such as microbiology and anatomy. Is this going to hurt my application at all? Or is it okay for my to simply state that I plan on taking those classes within my last two semesters!!!!! I'm a little worried considering there is no way for me to take these classes before I apply!!! Any responses would help GREATLY! Thanks 😱

I think most people apply the summer before their senior year so a lot still have a couple of pre-reqs to complete. It shouldn't be a big deal. 🙂

is anatomy even a pre req? I thought it was just a recommended course? correct me if im wrong?

i think anatomy is just a recommended course. it probably doesn't hurt to take it though

Anatomy is actually required in UCBSO and Pacific if I recall correctly. It's probably required at other schools as well.

Based on the prereq table on opted.org, Nova, Berkeley, Pacific, and UHCO all require some sort of anatomy course. All of the other schools either recommend, or STRONGLY recommend taking it. Based on my own experience, I would require it of everybody as I found Anatomy/Physiology to be very helpful during first year. Working in a cadaver is something everybody going into a health profession should do, IMHO.

I wanted to get into school before completing my bachelors. Is a GPA around 3.0 good for that [my cumm GPA is 3.37 with two uni's combined but I think some pre-req courses before calculus are taken out of GPA?? ).

Are you a pharmacy student? Just noticed your status...

Am I forbidden to ask any questions on this subforum due to my 'status' lol.

I am a biochem major and do have interest in pharmacy. I am working in lenscrafters so I think I should be able to get the shadowing requirements from an OD.

I was just asking about your status. 😳 You are welcome in our forum anytime... especially if you become a pharmacy student and have access to certain medications...😉

A GPA around 3.0 is lower than the average of the entering class for most of the optometry schools in the country. And, not having a bachelor's degree might make it a little tougher, so you should work to raise that GPA up a bit. I'm not sure if they eliminate the classes before calc from your GPA, so you should be able to count your GPA as the 3.37 (closer to the average for most schools). They'll look at your cumulative, science, and perhaps last 45 credit GPA when you apply. Try to figure out those numbers to get an idea of where you stand. If you have a few schools in mind, call them up to see what else you can do to strengthen your app.

Is it pretty bad for someone not having a bachelor to get into optometry compared to Pharmacy? I think the bachelor rate for Pharmacy is 65 or 70% for UIC.

At SCO:

Try 3/123... or 2.44% for my class.

For the class above me 1/120... or less than 1% chance.

I believe this year's entering class is about 2 or 3 at most, and I'm not sure the total # of people in it, but you could guesstimate it being at most 4%.

That's just SCO, remember, but I'm pretty sure many other schools are like that.

I guess the non-BS 😀 candidates must have really good GPA close to 4.0. I can complete my prereqs at the end of summer of 2008 so that is why I thought about optometry.

Jeez everything now requires a BS! Last question, OAT has multiple dates unlike PCAT, right?

You can schedule it whenever you want to. www.opted.org has the information. You just have to find a testing center in your area with an opening on your desired date. Go online, sign up, and get studying!

Good luck.

I know there is information about to wait 60-90 days for a date when you register but since you have taken it [i assume.. 😉], how earliest one can take the test when they register. Can it be around 2 weeks?

If I remember correctly, you register and pay the fee. After a week or two you will get a letter in the mail stating that you can now pick a time and place to take the exam. Depending on how many locations you have to choose from and how busy those locations are will determine what date you can take the exam. I imagine having to wait 60-90 days would only occur at extremely busy testing centers.
